I'm not sure it matters. It takes a lot more than a paper or two to demonstrate the scientific truth of something.

I guess you could read up on PTSD triggers, or consider the possibility that "jokes" which imply a threat of harm might be taken as actual threats by people who have been getting actual threats, that such "jokes" can be form of intimidation used to bully people into silence...or think about the perpetuation of the kind of sexist attitudes we see from religious fanatics who treat women like shit...

Some people honestly don't see "hurting people" as causing harm. Like me a couple years ago. It's that no-holds-barred, everyone is accountable for their own interpretation of reality that bothers me. It seems the more we learn about the mind the more we realize how tenuous our control is over our own behavior and reactions.

I'm having a harder and harder time seeing "right to be an asshole" trump "responsibility to act compassionately" these days.

Oh and just for the record, Pappa didn't dig his heels, ardently defending his right to be an asshole. He acknowledged his mistake, apologized for the pain it caused, and affirmed an intention to change his behavior in the future.

But it was too late by then. Everyone was already dripping with shit and no one even cared that the WHOLE FUCKING REASON FOR THE SHITSTORM WAS GONE.

I completely understand and agree with the criticism of the original joke.* I don't think the initial reaction to the thread was uncalled for. But that initial reaction immediately took on an abusive tone in its own right, and didn't abate in the slightest when THEY GOT THE FUCKING RESULT THEY WERE AFTER!!

Why did it have to go from "successful slap in the pants" to BURN PAPPA!!! BURN RATIONALIA!!! SLYME PIT OF RAPE CONDONERS COCKROACHES OF SLIMY RAPE RRRRAAWWWWRRRR!!!!!????

We're all individual people on the net ... somehow we become segregated, pigeonholed and labelled, just as we do in our everyday lives really. But it seems to be more apparent and intense online, where our minds and personas (I'm not talking about anything fake with that word .. persona .. in this context) are more directly interested and involved. We gravitate towards people we feel good about sharing time and intellect with, we set up and join communities and give the community meeting place a name, and for the most part enjoy the interaction that ensues .. which may or may not include visiting internal divisions, and the wider divisions between communities.

Someone here once said something about division that I have taken on board:

Division: As I have said on several occasions previously, the divsions that arise between people (friends) are already there. What you are suggesting is avoiding that which divides us and purely focussing on that which unites us. That is not a very constructive approach for me to further my understanding of the world.

I think that can be extended beyond friends, to our interaction and development as individuals among all of humanity, online and off.
