Is there a crisis within science?

Post by Atheist-Lite » Sat Jan 07, 2012 8:58 am

The human scientific enterprise appears to have come a long way and yet massive amounts of new data accrue daily without analysis. There are massive profit led factions with huge resources but catering for profit and the share price. A great deal of scientific knowledge is co-opted by the defensive industries for the purpose of blowing things up. Astronomy and research into very small objects is given enormous resources and kudos, perhaps in the hope of discovering a cheaper A-bomb for the paymasters? The climate change lobby is withering on the vine and research into our own scale of things is disregarded, with the Amazon rain forest being converted into IKEA heavan at an alarming rate and bushmeat, despite the disease risks, never being so popular as now. It appears everything is wrong with science except the idea itself. Like marxism is it entering a crisis and perhaps it's death throws. It will be replaced by honest engineers who may not know why things work or don't work but admit that? :smoke:

I suppose if you cherry-pick a selection of assorted "issues" you can paint it as a crisis... if you like. :dunno:

See. There is no consensus. That is the crisis I'm talking about. If we all could see the crisis then it would be disaster not a crisis. :smoke:

Science is perpetual crisis. If it stops being in crisis, then the real crisis begins. Science is standing on the ledge and daring to step off. It's retreating from the ledge that's the real danger.

Science can help with that! :{D
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

Science locally as curled up in a ball and died. I've tried to revive it but it refuses to come alive again on principle. :coffee:
