A story Crumple would like.

Somebody might remember the name of this story or the author...

Pacific Ocean, 1950s. Dedicated team of scientists working to test The Next Big Bomb. There is talk about just how big this might actually be, and some disagreement on it, one group saying the results will be higher than expected by a factor of over 1,000 times. Despite their alarms the test goes forward and during the final arming there are only three men in the tower with the bomb. They are working in the stifling heat to arm it when suddenly time stops for them. A manlike shape wreathed in sulfurous fumes and shimmering with heat appears. He prods the bomb with his pitchfork and looks it over carefully.

"Good, good, very good!" he says and vanishes.

The time comes and goes for the men to climb down from the tower and a few men are stent to find out what has happened to them. When they get to the bomb house they find the three men jibbering quietly and smashing every accessible part of the bomb that can be broken.

Sounds vaguely familiar, but don't remember title or author. There was also "Hell Fire" by Asimov, along similar lines.

I read that story once, about forty years ago. :dunno:

Not one of his best, but topical when written - super-slo-mo video of a test explosion, and they see the devil's face superimposed on the mushroom cloud...

Ah, yes, I remember that one. Defo not the story I'm talking about.

And that's quite likely to happen, is it?
