What have you unlearnt this week?

Life is full of misconceptions. So here's a place to explain what you unlearnt this week. What your most significant misconceptions have been. And being able to do so, here, to help us all understand ourselves better and make a better team.

I used to know the value of a good night's sleep. I seem to have forgotten that lesson.

Actually, I think I unlearnt that one years ago.
That's one of the problems that comes with lack of sleep: memory loss.

I thought a girl at work was in a relationship with a 40 years older news paper editor, but I learnt that she is in a relationship with a man of her age with the same name as the editor.

New Scienctist done a article about the value of knowing less but they put it behind their subscirption wall so I can't post it here. All about how being a expert trips you up and messes with your life. Apparently some call it the 'curse of knowledge' and the successful ones in lifes game being experts on ignorance ? this you can see by their 'brilliant' economical forecasts 100% with hindsight, 0% looking foreward and their still richer than anyone else? :funny:

Not only is all my work 'expertise' rapidly disappearing in the rear view mirror as I no longer need it and it gets out of date, but so are many thousands of previously healthy and functional brain cells.

I expect to unlearn a great deal over the coming years. :relax:

This afternoon I learnt that the expression "playing one out against the other" has a different meaning to the one I thought it had. It wonderful when that happens. The more, the better.

The process took a bit of the fun out of having a shower, though. This is particularly regrettable since I usually spend a fortnight looking forward to having one, but never mind. It could have been worse. I shave once a month.

For over a year, I've thought 직위 meant "workplace". Today I found out it just means "spot". I should've been saying 직장. :fp:

Yeah. And I guess everybody has been too polite to correct me.

The Cantonese word for egg and prostitute (phonetically it sounds a bit like 'cut') are identical except for the tone. Oh what hilarity ensues when learners of the language, over confident of their grasp of the lingo, attempt ordering scrambled eggs on toast!

Like a guy I knew who spent some time working in Spain. He shared an office with a couple of other people, but the room didn't have air conditioning. He was still learning to speak Spanish properly, and used to proclaim on hot days in the office that he was Caliente, thinking it meant "I am hot (temperature)". Turns out he should have been using the word "Calores" or something like that, as "Soy caliente" translates to "I am horny".
