Washington has won the dubious distinction of being the state with the most parents opting not to have their children be vaccinated. According to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, more than 6 percent of Washington kindergarteners were missing one or more immunizations in the 2009-2010 school year, with the chicken pox vaccine the most commonly missed; the state is said to be experiencing an “epidemic of worry over vaccine safety.”

Is this a typical American thing? Most Dutch parents I know can't wait to get their kids vaccinated.

Seems to be pretty common in England too. Haven't heard anything about it in Ireland.

Re: Washington State Parents Most Likely Not to Vaccinate
The typical vaccination schedule in the U.S. is very early and very heavy. Chicken pox is not a dangerous disease, and may be less dangerous than the unknown effects of the early vaccination schedule.
Skipping a few vaccinations is very different from skipping all of them, as some people do.

In holland we vaccinate for various things from measles to meningitis. Some are for relatively low risk but for instance 14 year young girls might get a vaccine to prevent birth defects should they get infected during pregnancy later on in life.
