Don't feed the trolls.
Don't like 'em, ignore them. If they don't think they're making somebody here angry, they'll go away. IF you simply can't not respond, make it something funny. Contempt, light regard and low esteem, that's how you make them go away, not by out arguing them.
Re: Don't feed the trolls.
That didn't work so well with Chuck.
Re: Don't feed the trolls.
You're 100% correct. Even if everyone disrespects and gets disgusted by them, they enjoy the attention. But I'm also a belliever in ridiculing the ridiculous, and during moments of weakness (such as when I'm drinkingGawdzilla wrote:Don't like 'em, ignore them. That makes it pretty un-neighborly, if not downright cruel, to ignore them.Ian wrote:You're 100% correct. Even if everyone disrespects and gets disgusted by them, they enjoy the attention. Will nobody have sympathy for the trolls?

What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

Seriously, each response feeds their ego and each angry response makes them feel like they've made someone else as miserable as they are. Sad sacks of shit that don't know how to do anything but troll.

But it's the ill thought out and facetious argument that never stops giving.

It is usually me.
Who has sympathy for the trolls.
I can't help it.

Re: Don't feed the trolls.
Another component are the 'murder simulators' especially first person shooters that allow people to feed their anger with primitive murderousness. There's plenty of studies showing how violent games desensitive people and blunt their caring emotions. This is why I don't think in term of trolls - because these are real angry, nasty people on the other side of the monitor. They should be considered 'really dangerous' not just as annoying. I fear the lesson will be learnt too late as organised violence is very likely through the adaptive secrecy of new social media like Google+. Peope know each other but that's a name, their anonymity will come through a badge, a party or a cause, hellbent on mayhem.Rum wrote:Excellent article - and one I am sure we can learn from here.Gawdzilla wrote:http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/20 ... -tim-adams
