Your Just World Theory?

Post by Atheist-Lite » Thu Jul 14, 2011 5:45 pm

The road to hell is paved with good intention. Are you suffering from a just world theory? Do you believe good will always triumph and use that as a excuse to have a 'perfect day' in a less than perfect world? What form does you sense of worldly justice take? Are you a nihilist and have moved beyond that or just starting out with the naive idealism of youth? :hehe:

Why would I need an excuse to have a perfect day no matter what the state of the world? Perhaps you mean an excuse to feel entitled to have a perfect day. In that case, I don't feel entitled to anything really. The world is not just. It is really quite horrible a lot of the time, but there are places and times when it is quite pleasant and I see nothing horribly wrong with enjoying those. On days when I'm sick and miserable, I don't wish to confine the rest of the world to a sickbed also.

But if the state of the world really gets you down, there are plenty of opportunities to reduce the suffering here and there in it.
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

As am I however I don't use it as a label for apathy or pessimism nor a stance to claim some kind of smug intellectual superiority which I find many who claim they are nihilists upon inspection do. I'm not accusing you of that btw, however I will ask if you consider nihilism as an end point to your world view?

It's in the mix for me but becoming so popular lately, so 'cool' these days I'm maybe gonna drop it and replace it with post-nihilism. :smoke:

Post Nihilism? Is that where you believe everything is as equally true meaningful and valuable? I think perhaps the Post Modernists might have beat you to it.

Wow. I think that was high on the list of my late father's favorite little comments. I think what he understood by it was that good intentions don't work, so why have them. Just kidding dad. How's the weather down there?

Post nihilism is where you destroy everything and rebuild something on the ruins so you can do some more destroying later. :smoke:
