Disturbing the concensus

Post by Santa_Claus » Sun Nov 28, 2010 12:08 pm

I was mildly surprised on this Forum - given both the subject matter and the rather off the wall aprroach to discussions -that my contributions on the economic reality thread appear to have been received so badly.

Ok, I don't expect everyone to agree with me (you have the right to be wrong :D ) and it's the internet so I expect some game playing - but it feels like talking to Jehovahs Witnesses, their is only their view. and it's true. any other view is an outrage. Seems to me that on Rationalia a concensus has long ago formed on how the world is and how it should be (at least ecoomically and politically)- with a disturbance to this settled (and mutually reinforced?) picture being unwelcome.......I can understand that, no one wants to discover everything they beleive in is wrong. Just ask the Pope  but I would have thought on Rationalia folks would at least be open to the idea that things they "know" might be wrong. and to think big picture / outside the box.....even if inconveniant.

Obviously my first reaction was "I could have some fun with these people" but seems more interesting to ask a question about how much questionning of world and self folks actually do. (leaving aside the god shite. it's a no brainer :funny: )

I don't normally read stuff regarding economics. What's the thread you're referring to? I'm always ready to have my world turned upside down. I get a thrill out of it, actually. (As long as the reasoning is sound, that is.)

There are members who are favourable to your view point . But TBH most of your posts have seemed like aggressive trolling even the one above .You make the assumption that we hold our views without thought or experience ,that you have greater knowledge and a monopoly on insight .

Aggressive trolling? yeah, I can see that. Part of the problem is that I am not seeking converts, so no need to humour folk.

to the contrary, I do understand that the views of folk are based on thought and experiance. part of the fascination, especially when it involves self interests amazibg what folk will beleive.

I guess I was kinda surprised that folk (who I assumed were adults with the wit to have discovered no gods and a bit of smarts about them) had still not got curious as to where their money comes from. and have not yet realised quite how in the poop the West is..........of course that in general being one of the reasons we are.

...curious as to where their money comes from...
Mine comes from some Korean printing press, I suppose. OK, conglomerates, big gummit, payoffs, clandestine dealings, yada yada. What's the news? :dunno:

Santa,

I don't think anyone was criticising you for having a particular set of views. What people took offence to was that you were adding your 'home truths' to a thread where everyone was consoling Rum, a member of long standing, on the fact that he will almost certainly be out of a job soon.

Some of the points you raised regarding big business and money were valid. Some, such as accusing Rum of sponging by doing half the work for the same money - due to him taking his pension, something that tends to happen to most people of his age! - were based on a lack of understanding of the facts and were downright insensitive. Now I am not saying that we should tiptoe around each others feelings - far from it - but I am saying that if you choose not to, you should be prepared for the inevitable backlash.

You also came up with a 'solution' for the problem of neglected children that was only a shade above Swift's "A modest proposal" and equally as difficult to take seriously! I enjoy a lot of your posts - mainly the wanking on the bus ones - but to seriously suggest that you were attacked because your arguments went against the 'agreed' political stance of the Ratz membership as a whole, as opposed to because you were spouting uninformed, sensationalist drivel, and when you didn't even link to the original posts, is a little disingenuous IMO. Some might even say, trollish - people may think so - I couldn't possibly comment.

Here is the link you omitted.

I've bolded the ironic part for you.

Because a person's world and self questioning doesn't lead to the same conclusions as yours does not mean it's not happening. I would think an intelligent atheist would be aware there's diversity of experiences and opinion on all things, even among those who have no belief in a god-thingo.

'I don't talk to old people. They smell of wee', is but one example of why people dislike you..rather intensely. Your general insensitivity, lack of empathy, arrogance about your views and an assumption that anyone who has a different view is stupid and ignorant is another.

You have a serious deficit in the people skills area, which explains the general reaction to your troll like behaviour.

You asked.
