I checked this old etymological dictionary I've got and it suggests its From Battualia, which is described as "A movement of soldiers or warriors" within a sense of conflict. Battalion is also apparently a derivation.

Two opposing forces engaged with each other is a battle Pord. It doesn't matter even if a shot was fired.
"What started as a legitimate effort by the townspeople of Salem to identify, capture and kill those who did Satan's bidding quickly deteriorated into a witch hunt" Army Man

It was never a question of the etymology or dictionary definition. I've explained this already. It's a red herring the trolls latched on to so they could be dicks. :sigh:

To rereiterate: I was comparing the relative scale of battles of WWI and WWII as it related to the subject of why people seem to focus more on WWII than WWI. Think of it in terms of the 'that's not a knife, this is a knife' idiom. Perhaps I should have used a different term. If you know of one which has the proper connotation I'd be happy to use it in the future.

The First World War was avoidable as it was a feud between all the related European dynasties which escalated because of the precarious balance of power. But it could so easily have been resolved nonetheless. The Second World War was entirely different and absolutely so too. No intricate balance of power here, as there was only one dominant one. It was, unlike the previous one, completely necessary. And what is sad is that many today are probably blissfully unaware of the sacrifice made to guarantee freedom, freedom which is taken for granted unfortunately. And which came at an astonishing price. The Russians alone lost twenty million so we should never forget lest it happen again. And the best way to guarantee that is to remember those who gave their lives and learn from the mistakes of history, lest they ever repeat themselves

Completely Neccessary? For Freedom? :funny:

Given that WWII allowed the Communists to prosper in Russia and capture half of Europe then I think it a stretch to say that Freedom was acheived.

My honest opinion is that the British and French Empires backed the wrong side. They certainly ended up on the wrong side of history - and kaput :hehe: Leaving aside the Jewish thing (which even the Nazis wanted to solve by simple relocation - hell, they could even have ended up in Palestine :hehe: if the Brits had played ball, or the Lebanon (hey, it's close enough!) if the French had agreed).....overall Hitler was probably a tad to the left of Mitt Romney (although of course we will now never know Mitt's true attitude to the Jews :ask: ).....by now that nice Mr Obama would be still in the White House - but serving coffee :tut: .

If the West could live with Stalin / the communist etc then could certainly have lived with Hitler / the Nazis - and a lot more chance to make money by trading with them, it's not as if the even the US was against doing business with the Nazis on principle...........Coca Cola - the official drink of The Battle of Britian - for both sides.....FACT.
