Tell the guys who died there it wasn't a battle. In person.PordFrefect wrote:rasetsu wrote:You're right. Pearl Harbor was a hockey game disguised as a battle.PordFrefect wrote:Pearl Harbour I'd discount as a battle, but the rest count I would think.
I think you may have watched the movie too many times? It's not a battle if one side is doing 90% or more of the bombing.. hell there wasn't even any real engagement of the Japanese forces.

Call it whatever you like if it makes you feel better. It won't make it so.

You know, I'm a professional historian, Masters from Purdue. I've never heard anybody who knew their ass from a hole in the ground about combat call that anything other than a battle.PordFrefect wrote:

A battle is a battle even when one side is ambushed and suffers a lopsided defeat.

Did I offend your sensibilities 'Zilla? I'm sorry.
What I was saying was that relative to the battles of WWI, there were few that could even come close to comparing in WWII. That's where it started. It was about relative scale. I suppose I stepped on your toes by daring to talk relativistically in your area of expertise.
I'll be sure to do you the same courtesy when you step on mine.

I think you've insulted a lot of good men. That's why I think you don't know shit about battles. In combat it's very often just you and maybe a few friends. The big picture only matters later.PordFrefect wrote:Did I offend your sensibilities 'Zilla? I'm sorry.

End of that argument.Ian wrote:A battle is a battle even when one side is ambushed and suffers a lopsided defeat.

For a professional historian you're quite emotive. Where's the academic detachment?
I insulted no one. That's your interpretation and not my problem.

Slow down GI Joe. I explained that I was making the point of relative scale between WWI and WWII.Gawdzilla Sama wrote:You were the one saying what wasn't a battle, so you must have the defo in your hand.PordFrefect wrote:Define 'battle' for me then.
Right now I'm under the impression from you and Ian that any engagement qualifies as a battle.
Re: First World War Beyond Living Memory So Let It Rest?
Whatever you like. I'd rather remain on amicable terms with you since I think you're not a bad guy.Gawdzilla Sama wrote:I have more fuck you if you want it.PordFrefect wrote:For a professional historian you're quite emotive. Where's the academic detachment?
