Look at my avatar. What did you expect me to say? Who the fuck is watching the show?

I'm not vivocentric. Lichens eat rocks. Who will stand up for the rocks?

Rocks erode. Abolish the Second Law of Thermodynamics!
Okay, you win.

I'm beginning to understand how you relate so effectively with rocks.

I'm childless, Gawdzilla. That doesn't mean I'm doing everything in my power to bring about the apocalypse, such as the folks who drive Hummers. I just don't think the rest of the world owes anyone else's kids a living.

I don't know of any children either. I also don't think anybody particularly "deserves" to be alive. But I do think humans can screw up this planet for everything else that is alive. And I AM vivocentric. Dead rocks are dead, and are simply inert matter. I have no sympathy for such.

Yes, but do you see anything unnatural about that?

The entire wibble about "free will" is about whether "human intention" can lead somplace definite.

A sense of responsibility is entirely different from a capacity of control.

Let's see. Humans denature the planet. Is that natural? I think not.

Really? If you're a determinist, YMMV.

Wipe out the bacteria! Finally, a clean-room that is really-o, truly-o clean! Ah, never mind. There might once have been bacteria on Mars. Fat lot of good it did them, if there were. I think Mars is a natural wonderland.

I missed the announcement about there being no life on Mars. Got a linky?

Well, yes, you have a point there. Unless we look under every single rock, we won't be sure, will we? I came here to wibble about free will, not about induction.

Free will...

Seems that it would only be possible to have it if you were able to choose your thoughts before you had them.
"A philosopher is a blind man in a dark room looking for a black cat that isn't there. A theologian is the man who finds it." ~ H. L. Mencken

"We ain't a sharp species. We kill each other over arguments about what happens when you die, then fail to see the fucking irony in that."

"It is useless for the sheep to pass resolutions in favor of vegetarianism while the wolf remains of a different opinion."

I think we need to some testing before we discount the idea, don't you? After all, on Mars they wouldn't be termed extremeophiles, would they?

I was being flippant. I certainly do not oppose research into searching for life on other planets. I don't think we will see confirmation of it in my lifetime. Perhaps in yours.

I don't think there is anything that will get god-botherers to STFU. Human biology has a natural tendency toward woo, and as we have seen, even strong aversion to facing certain facts about ourselves. That's why the free-will debate will never settle down.

True. However, I have my own take on "Free will". People will do what pleases the most or hurts the least whenever they have a choice. The only real variation on that is how they decide what pleases most or hurts least.
