What would you fight and potentially die for?

But I'd be willing to fight against a truly fascist government, a Muslim takeover or anything that curtailed our freedoms to a significant degree.

This is pretty much exactly what I was going to say, although I probably would have said theocracy rather than Islam specifically (and before anyone says it, the UK is a constitutional monarchy, not a theocracy). Anyway, we should hang out some time

And I've even contemplated methods which would involve killing tens of thousands of people. It doesn't matter. Nothing else matters. You don't matter, ultimately.

I am pretty much a pacifist and the idea of fighting and killing others is anathema. Nor do I believe that killing is justified if your reason is some wishy washy ideology. I have never believed the "better dead than red" bullshit. If needed, I would profess myself to be red and wait for a chance to change things.

However, I have no problem risking my life for others. Human life is, to me, the ultimate cause, and to save someone from dying, I will, and have, put my life at risk. I have been a 'water baby' all my life, swimming and scuba diving. I have plunged into rough seas on several occasions to rescue another person, and I have saved other people underwater, who got into trouble. Each time, I might have died myself.

So, I will not fight and kill for any cause, but I will risk my life to save others, when that is what is needed.

Far too must levity here at the moment. Here's a serious one..maybe.

Do you feel strongly enough about any idea, issue or thing in your life to physically fight and possibly die for?

Let's assume you would for those you love if they were under attack just to get that out of the way.

Since I didn't have my own children yet when I served, I guess I was willing to fight for other peoples' loved ones.

Keeping a theocracy from taking over.

Not necessarily at home; I'd be okay with fighting to wipe out a re-born Caliphate. And I consider that scenario a lot more likely to arise than a comparable thing here.

I guess the Soviet Union was essentially a Marxist theocracy.

It would be interesting to have a discussion on a modern Caliphate and how to prevent or fight it, though it would probably get too political.
