In theory, bigamy would be between consenting adults. In practice, bigamy is embraced by religious groups who engage in coercive sexual practices, exploitation of women, and child rape in the name of religious freedom. I don't know, off-hand, of any secular groups advocating plural marriages.

While I appreciate the information it really doesn't speak to the demographic point I was making. Given a brief googling it appears that demographic data on polygamists and polyamorists is next to non-existent. And the one study whose data I examined, curiously, on the question about religion doesn't list Mormon as an answer given (they may have listed as Christian, it's difficult to tell from the raw data). Which would seem at best to indicate that we are looking at two separate and distinct populations. Wikipedia notes that the number of persons living in polygamous families in Utah are estimated at 40,000 (I presume Mormon, but didn't check). That's 1.4 percent of the population. And while the demographic data I examined seemed to indicate the religious leanings of the non-Mormon polyamorous are well distributed, I highly doubt you will find anywhere near 1.4 percent of any non-Mormon group living in polyamorous relationships (ignoring other religions that advocates polygamy as doctrine).

ETA: Studies of manic depression estimate its prevalence at 1-1.5%. How many manic-depressives do you know? How many people living in plural marriages do you know? By percentage, you should know as many if not more people in plural marriage families if the incidence in Mormon families in Utah is similar to that of non-Mormon families where you live.

There are some wrinkles to iron out, like:

1. If you're married to 2 or 3 spouses, which one(s) get automatic coverage under employer health care plans?
2. Inheritance issues
3. Child support and child custody if there are divorces

Perhaps not insurmountable, but certainly issues to resolve.
