Never quite got how this was a sin and. I assumed that you always have to remember god is much much better than you and therefore you should feel like shit in comparison.

Or at least it can lead to arrogance, and that can be an impairment (not to mention an annoyance to others). A little bit of pride is certainly good, but it should always be mixed with an appropriate amount of humility.
