Steam and viruses.

Post by Pappa » Wed Jul 11, 2012 5:47 pm

Anyone had problems with viruses originating from Steam downloads? It seems to have happened a couple of times on Felix's computer even though AVG is installed. I just checked the Steam site and shockingly, this is what they have to say about Antivirus software....

I've never had the slightest problem with viruses from steam. I've never even heard of it before. I imagine that all of their content would be pretty thoroughly checked, though obviously nothing is impervious.

I also would never disable my anti-virus to play games though. It seems very odd and a bit reckless that Steam is recommending it. It's possible that some of the game crashes I've had have been caused by AV, but it only ever happens on some games, so I generally just consider them to be not very well made games.
[Disclaimer - if this is comes across like I think I know what I'm talking about, I want to make it clear that I don't. I'm just trying to get my thoughts down]

Not sure... I have a history of udp stuff trying to invade my machine in little bits,n not sure where they are from, but I make a point of klling the Steam process at boot unless I do intend to use one of my steam games during that particular session.

Apparently, some of the actions Steam performs behind the scenes are misinterpreted by AV programs as suspicious, and also some Steam games have been wrongly flagged as containing viruses. That's why they recommend switching off AV. But leaving a PC that's connected to the internet unprotected for even minutes is really stupid.

I get most of my games from Steam. Never had any problems with viruses. I've never had to disable my anti-virus for Steam.

Did you scan the steam folder or any files/folders it may have installed for the source of the virus?
