The Commandos are good at dealing damage but they fill up the stagger bar slowely whereas the Ravengers are weaker but increase the stagger bar quicker which is why it's good to have a mix of them both, all you need to do for the majority of fights is swap between Rav, Com, Rav and Com, Rav, Med when your health is low. The game really is that simple.
Thanks. I always use Relentless Assault. When health gets low, I switch to three medics so everybody heals each other. I figure that's the fastest way to get everybody back up to full health, but I may very well be mistaken.
I always have my party set as Lightening, Fang, and Hope. Vanille I find slightly annoying, but I'm quite fond of Hope. Let's not discuss that further.
You know that big field you're in at a certain point in the game? The one with the big dinosaur type creatures? Those dinosaurs annihilate me. I've leveled up to the point where I don't die instantly like I used to. But they still kill me pretty goddamn quick. I guess I'm not ready for them yet. Likewise, the giant motherfucking cactus that I took on. But even the lesser enemies that I feel I should be able to beat by now are giving me trouble. The dragon type creatures, for instance. Sometimes I can dispatch them right quick. Other times, however, I'll sneak up on them and as a result stagger them almost instantly. Ad yet, even while staggered, they'll rear up on their hind legs and renew their health. WTF? How can they do that when they're staggered? And there doesn't seem to be any way to stop them doing that once they decide to do that.
But it's not just a matter of whittling hem down again from full health. These sons of bitches have vicious attacks. There's one attack, I don't remember what it's called, but there's one attack that kills me instantly, even if I'm at full health. Instantly. And my health is leveled up very high. Plus I use fully upgraded top-of-the-line bangles on everyone, my own (Lightening, that is) raising my health 500 points fercryinoutloud.
Where are the goddamn shrouds? There were lots of them in the beginning of the game, but now there are none. Or are there? There was one path I went through a while back with flowers. Some of the flowers glowed noticeably. I thought for sure they gave off shrouds, but I found no way to interact with them. How do you pick up shrouds, assuming they are still around? I can't remember, and the game manual doesn't say.
How do I ride the chocobos? I got into their area, and it seems I'm supposed to interact with one of them but I've no idea how. They game probably told me, but Sarah was studying in the living room, so I had the sound turned all the way down. And then, because I couldn't hear what the characters were saying, I figured fuck it and skipped the cutscene
Now there are chocobos out in the field, and I can finally get to areas I couldn't get to before (those goddamn yellow circles were pissing me off). Only I don't know how to ride the chocobos.

Dragon Quest IX is a riot!
The biggest flaw is the job system. You don't have a character level but a job level, so if you change jobs you're back to level 1.
Experience is based on level as well, so a level 30 character might get 200 while a level 1 character gets 30.
Abilities aren't carried over either, most of them time you either have to change to a class with a shared skill (sword etc.) or level that skill up to 100 using the Skill points you get from levelling in order to use unlocked abilities.
However... it's a shitload of fun. Customizeable characters and the equipment makes a visual difference not just a stat difference. There are some interesting additions there too... you can dress up female characters as playboy bunnies if you go on a treasure hunt...
The skills aren't just 'bigger and better' versions either, for the most part the first abilities you unlock can be just as useful as the last abilities you unlock, depending upon the mosnters you face.
There's a lot of grinding for gold, though, and levelling is really only possible either through hours of grinding, or hours of 'metal slime' hunting. Metal Slimes give you 1000+ xp and can be found as early as the second dungeon, while the final enemies of the game give you around 300xp each. Unfortunately, they're rare and they tend to run away. At one point I was running around for half an hour before I found one, got in to battle and first move it ran. Much raging was done. (getting 20xp per battle when I needed well over 1000 to level up...)
As for the battle system, no random battles (except at sea.. but that's only a very short part of the game. Spend about five minutes using the boat in total.) Instead, little avatars of the monsters wander around the map and you run in to them to initiate battle, making it easy to avoid unwanted fights. Occassionally they'll chase you or, if you're a high enough level, run.
There's an alchemy system for those dedicated completionists as well as a monster list, equipment list and item list which can be filled up to 100%. You can collect recipes so you're not stuck simply mixing and matching ingredients.
The story is a little rubbish, but in traditional JRPG style.
Handy little game for the DS and as much of a time sink as Western RPGs like Baldur's Gate or Dragon Age.
