Wheel of time...

Post by JimC » Wed Dec 09, 2009 8:59 am

Any fans of the mammoth fantasy saga, The Wheel of Time by the now deceased Robert Jordan?

Somewhat overblown, perhaps, but it still gets me in...

Just started to read the 12th volume by Brandon Sanderson, The Gathering Storm, written from detailed notes left behind by Jordan... (at least 2 more to go...)

Good, competent writer, the new guy...

Read the first one.

Hated the shit out of it.

I am destined to go through life enjoying things that others I respect cannot stand... ;)

Which is a valuable learning experience!

(much of my reading is truly, deeply escapist...)

It was well written but I just thought it had more writers conveniences than the Bible.

With fantasy, all it has to do is grab me and take me into another world for a decent length of time...

If it works well, RL seems pale when I put down the book...

Think I read the first 3 enormous tomes, then realised that, after about 3000 pages, nothing had actually happened. The thought of reading another 9000 pages filled me with dread...

Jim, have you read Neil Stephenson's Baroque Cycle, same monumental scale and full of ideas. Takes a while to get into it but ultimately rewarding, IMO.

Recommend Michael Scott Rohan's Winter of the World trilogy too.

It's actually not too bad, but there is a regrettable shortage of dark, twisted things that I can cleave with my massive broadsword...

Will check them out...

In return, have a go at Glen Cook, particularly the Black Company series...

Also check out Guy Gavriel Kay's Fionavar Tapestry. A bit flowery but 'tis epic stuff.

Ooh, and Tad Williams' Memory, Sorrow and Thorn trilogy. Superior fantasy romp.

JimC - that's my webpage I did for fun once

http://www.nwvisuals.com/

Check out the Wheel of Time section :)

I don't do it anymore because it's hugely time consuming.

I stopped after book six. Couldn't keep track of all the characters' names anymore. Was time to call it quits. Now I read A Tale of Ice and Fire. SOOO much better.
