Phrases in English people google

Post by Tero » Thu Mar 27, 2025 12:18 pm

I will start with this:

"A bustle in your hedgerow," a line from Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven."

Context in the Song:
The line appears in the context of "Stairway to Heaven," where it is followed by "Spring clean for the May Queen," further suggesting a theme of renewal and change.
May Queen:
The May Queen is a symbol of spring and new beginnings, and the bustle in the hedgerow could be interpreted as the natural world preparing for spring.

International disaster, international disaster

Before you lose the chance to score (Pembroke)

Tuppence a ton
Right hand man took his bullwhip out and screamed for the nineteenth son
Who suffled in with his shirt all torn and his pants undone
"Get over here and lie right down, I'll show you what's to be done
We know you inside out
Tuppence a ton - tuppence a ton"

Nineteenth son screamed with all his might as the cartwheel spun
The right-hand man made the treadmill grind 'til it started to hum
"Let me out, I'll pay my dues, just name your sum"
We know you kind inside out
Tuppence a ton - tuppence a ton"

At best it's a nonsense song, at worst a vanguard for Vogon poetry.

Most of Plant's lyrical output was focused on boasting about having sex with willing (or unwilling) partners or just pleading for sex. Don't forget to factor that into the contextual analysis.

Nobody actually uses 'a bustle in your hedgerow' as an everyday idiomatic declarative.

"my hovercraft is full of eels"
A rational skeptic should be able to discuss and debate anything, no matter how much they may personally disagree with that point of view. Discussing a subject is not agreeing with it, but understanding it.

Roughly in this category, I asked AI whether people, native speakers, know what a prepostion is. Only one good hit:
No, native speakers mostly just listen to what we hear. When I learned English as a small child, the phrase "between you and me" was normal, and the rule for the preposition "between" requiring the object case operated beyond the "and" boundary. I still insist on this usage, every time, and will keep doing so until I die, and regard any other usage as bordering on the illiterate. Unfortunately, hypercorrection of "me" to "I" from other grammatical contexts has eroded the rule about prepositions taking the object case in English irrespective of perceived "and" boundaries, and increasingly, we hear "between you and I". I suspect that when members of my generation finally shuffle off this mortal coil, the battle against what we see as an error will increasingly be lost, and the rule requiring the object case will eventually no longer extend beyond the "and" boundary, irrespective of what we have tried to teach.
