I hate roman à clef and pop culture literature

Case in point Bug Jack Barron by Norman Spinrad. For Years and years I missed the fact that the much referred to character Malcolm Shabazz was a direct reference to Malcolm X, and I still don't know how many references and humorous bits I'm still missing.

It's a 'novel with a key', where the various characters and events are mirrors of real world persons and situations... people who are in the know will see whom the 'novel' actually speaks about.

Of course, I'm not hip or in the know so I usually miss it all.
