Wacky/unusual books you own

Post by Trinity » Tue Sep 03, 2013 9:33 am

I love books, to fawn over them on my bookshelves and of course, to read. I will read pretty much anything (apart from trashy girly/romantic novels) because I am fascinated by different authors' individual perceptions and ideas and also where those sit in an historical sense.

One of my favourite unusual books is "A Treatise on White Magic" by Alice Bailey, 1934.
Another wacky one: "The Ancient Science and Art of Pranic Healing (practical manual on paranormal healing)" by Choa Kok Sui.

And "Talk does not cook the rice" a commentary on the teaching of Agni Yoga by Guru RHH.

And "Choirs of the God- revisioning masculinity" edited by John Matthews (an internationally acknowledged authority on the Arthurian and Grail legends).

Bonkers, but fascinating :D.

Go on, 'fess up!

I have a little shelf devoted to wack books... like a 'treatise of Celtic magick' that relies in part on buddhist visualisation techniques.
I also used to own a volume of the Great and the Little Alberts, renaissance grimoires of esoteric science and chemycal recipes... some bunk, some actual.

Does 'The Mists of Avallon' revision of the Arthurian myths by well known Sci-Fi author Marion Zimmer Bradley count?

Any weird and wacky books have long since been banished from this house (apart from the vast collection of Bibles...), though I think a couple of pamphlets from Hari Krisha types are lurking somewhere. My dad has/had a collection of titles from the likes of Erich von Daniken - I read a few in my more impressionable days. I have many books that others might find esoteric from my previous hobby/lifetime, but they're not remarkable in any way.

Oh, and a book of 1960s architecture I got at the Glasgow Meet, in which the praises of many structures of the era are sung, without the hindsight of concrete-cancer and 50 years of weathering.

I have the holy texts of Christians, Jews, The cult of Krsna conciousness, Muslims, Hindus, Discordians, Subgenuises, the Celts, Thelemites, the Cthulhu cult, Nazis Socialists and various anarchist sects . Books on magic, tantra, the practices of the Golden Dawn, The Goetia, card tricks. The oddest book and probably most impressive of all of the books I own is still Finnegans' Wake by James Joyce.

I have a signed Crowley book[let] somewhere...

...or used to. Haven't seen it in years; I wonder where it is now I think of it... :ask:

I have stacks of bibles and other religious texts of various flavors, the oldest dating from the 1780s.

This one is particularly amusing, published in 1883:

"The Lazy Man's Guide to Enlightenment" by Thaddeus Golas, and all of Carlos Castaneda's books.
And 2 copies of Principia Discordia, of course.

Great thread, for a long time now my weekend outing has been to go to the used bookstore. I'll never read them all of course, but who cares? Unfortunately (?) I haven't bought many wacky books. But many have been given to me -I can't imagine why. :hehe: I'll look when I get home.

I've got a very rare first edition of an exceedingly strange book called "Percy Gets Probed". :shifty:
[Disclaimer - if this is comes across like I think I know what I'm talking about, I want to make it clear that I don't. I'm just trying to get my thoughts down]

I hear it's a fucking masterpiece. Is it true there's a dickoad of cocks in it :ask:
People think "queue" is just "q" followed by 4 silent letters.

But those letters are not silent.

They're just waiting their turn.

I am duly impressed by the variety you lot have stashes of. I am particularly envious of yours, Audley :)

Tatt, I have to read your book now!
