As in writers of books. Who do you like?

Some of my most-loved authors are:

Terry Pratchett. I think I've read all of the Discworld novels, and always find them enjoyable. Though I need to read a few different authors before I can really have a favourite.
[Disclaimer - if this is comes across like I think I know what I'm talking about, I want to make it clear that I don't. I'm just trying to get my thoughts down]

Reading Evelyn Waugh's Vile Bodies at the moment and that has elicited a few snorts and a sort of gurgling chuckle.

Twain.
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

Kingsley Amis can be rather droll.

PG Wodehouse and Mark Twain are among my favorites too, as is Jonathan Swift.
François Rabelais is very funny, if you're ready to have some very brainy laughs, not to mention the fart jokes and mocking the church.

I ought to get soe Pratchett, but never knew where to start.

Unexpectably, I also often laugh quite a bit when I read the works of Jack Vance or Norman Spinrad... I suspect they both would approve.

Should the thread title be spelled in the correct British English? Houmourous?
