SF for the Non-SF Fan
What can you recommend? I loathe the kind of SF that is an endless litany of technical descriptions and suchlike.
Right now I'm interested in reading Harrison's Make Room! Make Room! Other suggestions?

Look for social science fiction rather than hard science fiction; titles which explore alternate/future societies more than the technology which makes them go.
Off the top of my head:
Beggars in Spain by Nancy Kress
Gattaca (film)
Most titles from Ursula K. LeGuin

More Than Human by Theodore Sturgeon.
Hothouse by Brian Aldiss.
The Man In The High Castle by Philip K Dick.
The Dispossessed by Ursula LeGuin.
That should do for starters...

Anthologies are good samplers, as are "Fantasy and Science Fiction" and "Analog" magazines.

Ever read The Jane Austen Book Club?
One of the characters is really into scifi. He recommends a bunch of books (including anything LeGuin) to an Austen fan. I'd like to check out all of them.

You don't seem bothered about older stuff, in which case, if you don't mind him going on a bit, I recommend Stranger In a Strange Land by Robert Heinlen. Kind of the same plot as The Man who Fell to Earth.

Actually I have, maybe 15 years ago. Don't remember much but the basic plot, but I liked it.Gawdzilla wrote:Bella, if you haven't read that I'll send you a copy Monday.Rum wrote:You don't seem bothered about older stuff, in which case, if you don't mind him going on a bit, I recommend Stranger In a Strange Land by Robert Heinlen.
