Books you don't like but others do

Post by Lozzer » Sat Jan 22, 2011 6:04 pm

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the night time
The Kite Runner
Catcher in the Rye.

All pure shite, I'm sorry, but they are.

Catcher in the Rye is one of the greatest books ever written :lay:

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Thought it was lame :dunno: But I read it a long time ago and don't remember any of it. Dunno what I'd make of it if I read it now :ask:
People think "queue" is just "q" followed by 4 silent letters.

But those letters are not silent.

They're just waiting their turn.

I may have to hire a scarred Serbian hitman to "take you down". No, really.

Some people consider "Anna Karenina" a masterpiece, but I consider the character of Anna to be an obvious case of multiple personality disorders, a weak story anyway.

Sorry
I loved Good Omens so much, and the Gaiman/Pratchet book was favorably compared to Hitchhiker's Guide. So I figured I'd read that as well, and expected something in a very similar vein as Good Omens. But the Douglas Adams book fell flat for me. I didn't think it was terribly clever, and I didn't think it was funny at all. BUT, I'm open to re-reading it. I might very well have a more favorable opinion of it now. In fact several people, upon reading one of my own stories, have told me my writing reminds them of Douglas Adams  :dunno:

Catcher in the Rye.

Meh, over-rated.

I haven't been able to force myself beyond the first twenty pages or so of Gravity's Rainbow-- which is apparently a modern classic. And Lady Chatterly's Lover was, in my humble opinion, totally retarded.

Catcher in the Rye was all right. Not great. Just O.K. Certainly not transformative, and I sort of pity anyone who identifies with Holden Caufield.

I think the Harry Potter books are great, if you're twelve.

I read about half of A.K. Then I realized I already knew she ends up throwing herself under a train, and that I didn't really care how she got there, so I quit.

I tend to find that books that sell millions are shite. In fact, a good rule of thumb is that if it boasts about selling millions of copies on the back cover it's going to be complete and utter dung.

Exhibit A: This dreck my friend dropped on my lap like an ugly baby.

To make it worse; my friend asked me what I thought about his "beautiful baby" - I had to tell him straight. This book's all well and good if you already believe in that nonsense (faith can move mountains) but if you don't it's like kicking a Zimmerframe out from underneath an old-age pensioner - it falls flat on its face :ddpan:

I agree. I spent most of the book wanting to punch the author in the face, and I was very puzzled that my friends expected or experienced any kind of whatever with that pamphlet.

That does appear to be a Universal Law of Books.
