I don't read sci-fi either.
Although I've sorta been writing a sci-fi novel.

I will read anything with a decent plot but 9 times out of 10 I'll probably be reading Sci-fi
Reading this for the second time now though,
Brilliant.

I seriously recommend this book. It's the true story of Martha Long growing up in Dublin in the 60's with a hopeless mother and an abusive stepfather and how she survives on the city street to get a bit of food for her mother and brothers. Touching, funny and inspiring.
Not sure it's sold outside of Ireland yet though.

'Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner' by James Hogg, or 'The Turn of the Screw' by Henry James.

A Dictionary of Obscenity, Taboo and Euphemism

This book is worth a read for the introduction alone, which outlines the process of evolution some worlds in the English language take on a downwards spiral. On top of that, the main text is very informative and funny too. If you can find a copy, get one.

Very funny book. Zack Parsons writes about giant tanks, flying tanks, submarine tanks, iceberg aircraft carriers, and Nazi space stations. How can you beat that?
