Re: The 50 book Challenge 2011
21. Baby Bargains-- Denise and Alan Fieldshadespussercats wrote:
Yup, this is exactly what it sounds like. The authors are generally informative, and they strive for a friendly tone.
But, as I wrote elsewhere:
"As I was flipping through the section on maternity wear, I came across this line:
Okay, I'll admit that I don't normally shop at K-mart or Target for my clothes. But I was surprised to discover these chains (and even department stores like Sears) carry casual maternity clothes in 100% cotton at very affordable prices.
I've got to wonder-- if you wouldn't normally even consider shopping at Target for clothes, what business do you have writing a book called Baby Bargains? I mean, doesn't this say something about the socio-economic level of the authors, and their idea of what bargain shopping is, if they sound so vaguely dismissive of shopping at these sorts of places unless you're in the market for (relatively disposable) maternity wear?
I like fashion. But hell-- I've worn stuff from Sears and Target-- even K-mart, if we're talking bras, sleepwear, and workout clothes. Because I'm not made of money. Which is why I bought a book called Baby Bargains."
So that's all there is to say about that.
22. Black Hills- Nora Roberts
OK, OK, another Nora. This one was new to me, though-- borrowed from my mom when I was home for Easter, to have something not-too-challenging to read for the bus. And it was pretty good-- the main character runs a wildlife refuge in South Dakota. She finds love with a former-NYC-cop-turned-horse-rancher, who helps her to evade the serial killer who's been stalking her for a decade.
Meanwhile, I've been slowly working my way through a collection of anthropological/sociological essays. They're good, but they take focus to appreciate-- hence the brainless reading breaks. Hopefully I'll be finished soon, and can tell you all about it.

27. Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
I'm wild just like a rock, a stone, a tree
And I'm free, just like the wind the breeze that blows
And I flow, just like a brook, a stream, the rain
And I fly, just like a bird up in the sky
And I'll surely die, just like a flower plucked
And dragged away and thrown away
And then one day it turns to clay
It blows away, it finds a ray, it finds its way
And there it lays until the rain and sun
Then I breathe, just like the wind the breeze that blows
And I grow, just like a baby breastfeeding
And it's beautiful, that's life

And I'm free, just like the wind the breeze that blows
And I flow, just like a brook, a stream, the rain

- About me: Twoflower is the optimistic-but-naive tourist. He often runs into danger, being certain that nothing bad will happen to him since he is not involved. He also believes in the fundamental goodness of human nature and that all problems can be resolved, if all parties show good will and cooperate.

And I fly, just like a bird up in the sky
And I'll surely die, just like a flower plucked
And dragged away and thrown away
And then one day it turns to clay
It blows away, it finds a ray, it finds its way
And there it lays until the rain and sun
Then I breathe, just like the wind the breeze that blows
And I grow, just like a baby breastfeeding
And it's beautiful, that's life
