Robert E. Howard (derail from piercing thread)

Eversbane: your sig: is that Robert E. Howard?
"Her eye was on the sparrow. Her mind was on the dove,
But no one cared and no one dared to speak to her of love.
Her eyes are always hooded. Her claws are sharp as steel.
We teach her not to see too much. We teach her not to feel."

Indeed! And the avatar is Conan.

Coincidentally, just this evening I came this >||< close to picking up an anthology of Mr. Howard. A new publication claiming to be completely faithful to the original Weird Tales printings, including the complete Kull and other stories - not just Conan. Very, very tempting. I've got some birthday money burning a hole in my pocket. I had dedicated that money to rebuilding my old record collection in CD, but that may have to wait.

I have two compendiums of Weird Tales... great stuff. You've reminded me that I should re-read them...

I thought it was probably something by Frazetta. Too small to make out.

Grab it while the grabbing's good. Conan collections don't stay on the market long.

It is actually, I think, a picture of a figurine :dono:

Good advice. Thanks.

"When I was a fighting man, the kettle drums they beat;
The people scattered gold dust before my horse's feet.
Now I am a might king; the people hound my track
With poison in my wine cup and daggers at my back."

Forget what that was from. A King Kull story, I think.

I'll be back at the bookstore in about an hour. I've not a nagging little memory though that the only copy on the shelf was a vol.2. I'll have the staff scouring the back room if that's the case.

"All dead, all done, so lift me on the pyre;
The guests are gone, and the lamps expire."

Coolest suicide note ever.

Just a bump in reference to this:
Coincidentally, just this evening I came this >||< close to picking up an anthology of Mr. Howard.
Turns out it was published in 2002, so not as new as I thought. Still, it's got:

From Weird Tales
The Phoenix on the Sword, 1932
The Tower of the Elephant, 1933
The Scarlet Citadel, 1933
Queen of the Black Coast, 1934
Black Colossus, 1933
Iron Shadows in the Moon, 1934 (as Shadows in the Moonlight)
Zuthal of the Dusk, 1933 (as The Slithering Shadow)
The Pool of the Black One, 1933
Rogues in the House, 1934
The Devil in Iron 1934

also

The Frost-Giant's Daughter (from Rogues in the House, Donald M. Grant, 1976)
The God in the Bowl (from The Tower of the Elephant, Donald M. Grant, 1975)
The Vale of Lost Women (from Magazine of Horror, 1967)

So that's good for a bit of reading. It's The Coming of Conan the Cimmerian, but the pages are titled The Coming of Conan, Volume I.

The wife let me buy it but I had to promise to let her wrap it. I can't read it until Christmas.

Quite a collection.

Yes! I was going to buy it earlier with the money from my Nov. 3rd birthday, but that money went to buy a new Craftsman 19.2V cordless drill combo when my old drill bit the dust suddenly. Now it's a Christmas present from my MIL. I have to wait until I unwrap it and act all surprised. Not a problem, as I am currently re-reading number 9 in C.J. Cherryh's Foreigner series. The next one to buy, though, with my Christmas money, is volume II, which includes all the Kull stuff and a bunch of other early writings.
