Cannes.. and apparent sexism

Post by Elessarina » Wed May 16, 2012 9:54 am

The Cannes Film Festival opens later with US director Wes Anderson's film Moonrise Kingdom.

His movie, which stars Bill Murray, is one of the 22 movies selected to compete for the festival's biggest prize, the Palme d'Or.

However, the celebrations have been marred by criticism that no female directors will be in competition.
I've just been reading this article and it really insenses me. Films should be nominated on merit .. it doesn't matter who wrote or directed them. Are they suggesting a film by a woman should be included JUST because it's by a woman.. who will that benefit? :freak:

A black lesbian woman in wheelchair is preferable.
Outside the ordered universe is that amorphous blight of nethermost confusion which blasphemes and bubbles at the center of all infinity—the boundless daemon sultan Azathoth, whose name no lips dare speak aloud, and who gnaws hungrily in inconceivable, unlighted chambers beyond time and space amidst the muffled, maddening beating of vile drums and the thin monotonous whine of accursed flutes.

Most movies are still directed by men (a plain fact of life), so the chances of a list of "best" movies not having any women directors is substantial. Next year, there could be 5 or 6 women directors. That's just the way it goes.

... especially if she believes in some new-age woo. That covers all the bases. :hehe:
