Salt water rednecks are definitely at the top of the race ladder.
Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.

I heard the salt-water-rednecks with farmer tans look down on the ones with trucker tans.

I agree. My parents (mom 91 and dad now gone would be 94 now) looked upon black African people with benevolent condescention well into the 1970s. They were good and pretty liberal people and so they tried to change their thinking but it is hard to shake off some stuff you pick up early on in life.

We were colonials in Hong Kong - expats. My mother always thought the locals (all southern Chinese more or less) lazy and dishonest and thought nothing of pushing her way to the front of queue of Chinese people if needs be. Ironically of course the Chinese, for whataver reason seem to live to work and work like fuck(at the risk of counter stereotyping).

I will happily recount my travels 42, when I have s spare hour or two. I did the South Asia hippy trail as well as the north African route. Perhaps slightly unusually I did it one way, flying from Hong Kong, where my parents still lived (I was at Uni in the UK by then) to Sri Lanka and travelling overland and a few bits of water all the way back to Blighty....where I promptly collapsed with amoebic dysentery.

Another time in any case.

Well, now that sounds like an amazing time. I was unaware of any sort of hippy trails in my younger days, and I think I was too busy trying to "fit in" somewhere in my late teens that to travel the world like that just never came up in my mind. It won't happen now, of course, because I have little ones to think of. I'd like to skip the amoebic dysentery, but the rest of your adventures sound marvelous.
