Chances are, they both lied in some respect.

Bottom line, though, they had no kids, and if he or she wasn't treating the other right, they should have just divorced and moved on. Naturally, though, he was an idiot and married without a prenuptual agreement and under California law, she'd be entitled to half of their community property (including pre-marital assets that were earned and accumulated throughout his career).

Lesson to be learned: If you have significant assets, make them sign a prenuptual agreement and make sure it's rock-solid.
