Ocean's 8 - better than I expected. Rather unbelievable, but then all the Ocean's movies have that same level of unbelievability - you just have to suspend disbelief and accept that these are genius good-guy/girl crooks who hardly have to break a sweat to pull off complex schemes.

I'd give Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, and Anne Hathaway around an A for acting. Helena Bonham Carter did not come through with her best performance ever, maybe a B+. Mindy Kaling was rather unnecessary to the film. Sara Paulson, Awkwafina and Rihanna were all pretty good. Rihanna played the crazy hacker - and those roles always suck because of the way they are portrayed on film. She's hacking, and of course, it's a lot of furious typing and strange dialog boxes popping up on the screen - nothing makes sense and then wallah, she's in -- what an amazing hacker. But, that's par for the supporting-actor-hacker role.

Overall, the story was fine - I don't think I'm spoiling too much when I say that there is a heist that Danny Ocean's sister has been planning, and she gets together her old pals to work the job. Same as the previous male con artist group versions. They have access to wildly expensive technology, and they always find a way to access the most impossibly secure systems to do just what they need done. But, that's what's fun about this kind of popcorn chomping fun diversion on a weekend evening.

So, I'd give the movie overall a B to a B+ - the cast was pretty good, and the story was fun and adequate.

It's not as good as Ocean's 11, but neither were Oceans 12 and 13 and they were serviceable diversions too. I'd give Ocean's 11 an A because of it's cast, story and inventiveness (at the time). 12 and 13 get a B and B- respectively. Ocean's 8 a B to B+ overall.

I read some highly critical stuff about it ahead of time, so my expectations were not overblown. I think some of the criticisms I read were unfair. Some criticisms were looking at the looks and age of the actresses involved, but I was pleased with the casting. I think you needed the main characters played by Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett to be solidly in their late 40s. These are seasoned professional con artists who have done countless jobs. So, I really would think it would have been miscast if they did the usual Hollywood thing of placing some 24 year old piece-of-ass in as the unparalleled scientist or tech person. Cate and Sandra are still hot, but they also can reasonably play someone with 25 years experience taking down marks and conning bad guys. The younger actresses playing the wacky hacker and the funny pick-pocket/3 card monty dealer extraordinaire are well-cast too, because they are more the "from the streets - been doin' this since they was 10 years old" kind of character model.

If I had to criticize anyone's appearance, I'd say Helena Bonham Carter and Mindy Kaling could have gotten a bit more fit for their roles. But it's really not particularly a relevant point.

Anyway - it's worth a view. Don't listen to the detractors.

Zombies don't care about your tastes. When you are in a zombie movie only their taste counts.
