Pacific Rim - well whoda thunk it!?
The thing has good reviews. I had discounted it to be frank.
Will go see it!

Eye candy. I was afraid it would be another Transformer movie.

There will be a pr0n spoof on the title. Count on it.

I was looking forward to this since I first saw the trailer last year. It has a good director behind it which gave me hope from the beginning.

I've heard two things. The movie reviews were surprisingly good++. But the theme is more suited for the Godzilla loving Japanese, where it is expected to do very well. So if you are looking for a "good" giant robot vs space alien monster movie this sounds like it may be a good pick.
A rational skeptic should be able to discuss and debate anything, no matter how much they may personally disagree with that point of view. Discussing a subject is not agreeing with it, but understanding it.

Re: Pacific Rim - well whoda thunk it!?
It was dumb and derivative but HOLY SHIT ROBOTS PUNCHING MONSTERS
Seriously, it was way cool and quite a visual treat. This is a movie that absolutely must be seen on a big screen in the theater. Just don't go in expecting anything of substance, or expecting things to make any sort of sense. And the lead actor is kind of bland. But this film is an amazing spectacle.
The thing I liked best about the film, besides the big punching robots punching the aliens, were the few funny characters thrown in: Ron Perlman as a black market trader in monster parts, and the two "scientists" employed by the punching robot people once their government funding runs dry. There's one scene in particular between the scientists that made me laugh out loud. Also, Black Heimdall is in this, but unlike the Thor movie, here he's not horribly miscast and is actually pretty cool.
I just wish this film had more of the trademark del Toro quirkiness and charm. But still it was fun.

People think "queue" is just "q" followed by 4 silent letters.
But those letters are not silent.
They're just waiting their turn.

Yeah, I'm still in a huff that Del Toro wasn't given the cash to make "At The Mountains of Madness."

I didn't know anything about that. Just looked it up. Looks like it was greenlighted at one point but del Toro was insisting it be released as an R-rated film but the studio wanted it to be PGAudley Strange wrote:Yeah, I'm still in a huff that Del Toro wasn't given the cash to make "At The Mountains of Madness."

I would very much like to see del Toro do something more personal like his earlier films. But I would also very much like to see Hellboy 3

I'm not, nobody can do that one correctly, and I don't need anybody more on my murder lists.Audley Strange wrote:Yeah, I'm still in a huff that Del Toro wasn't given the cash to make "At The Mountains of Madness."

It's next to impossible to do Lovecraft on film.
Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.

Have there been any attempts? I can't think of any..
Similarly the Gormenghast books would be close to impossible to film ..

Yeah, there have been quite a few. Re-Animator and The Dunwich Horror were probably the best. So much of the atmosphere in a Lovecraft story is due to his language, dreaming fogbound spires, vile drums and thin wailings of accursed flutes and suchlike. It just doesn't translate to film.Rum wrote:Have there been any attempts? I can't think of any..

I'm going to have to pull out my Lovecraft anthology.
EDIT I certainly agree about Gormenghast. and for the same reasons.
