I saw a name on the BBC web site - someone called Keith Lemon, apparently a presenter or some such and I have never heard of him. It reminded me that I don't watch any of the so called talent shows, reality shows or even quiz shows any more and I have no idea who people talk about around the water cooler at work any more!

Occasionally someone will post some bit of celebrity gossip on my facebook or Google + page and most of the time, I don't have a clue as to who they are or what they've done to qualify as a celebrity. I listen to public radio and don't watch network television, just cable channels - mostly the nerdy ones with science and nature shows.

I've seen some of his Celebrity Juice show, and didn't realise this. It just seemed to be genuine unfunny celebrity gossip with unfunny half-celebrities.

I barely watch TV. I often have people recommend me TV shows and I'm constantly disappointed when I do cave and watch them. The last one being the show Mad Men everyone was raving about as usual talking about how great the writing is etc... I thought it was slow-moving, padded-out, uninteresting shite. Even House was only interesting for a few episodes 'til you realise it's formulaic. I think Game Of Thrones is the first show I've watched avidly in quite some time but will it hold my interest beyond that third season?

As for reality TV. I have never watched it. I don't have to to know it's shite the ads tell me everything I need to know. Some people think that's ignorant. I don't. I only want to see talented people up on screen. Not the plebs clamoring for fame. It's like going to a school nativity or something. These arseholes who go on these shows remind me of The Desperates on Channel 4's The Word years ago who used to debase themselves just so they can be on TV only without the honesty.

I don't feel I'm missing anything when people talk about these shows and I haven't a clue who they're talking about. Fuck them. No one ever wants to talk with me about stuff I'm interested in.

The only things I watch on TV are The Simpsons and Futurama.... and the news once a fortnight or so. I suppose that means I'm out of touch.... but then even when I did watch more TV I didn't watch the talent shows, Big Brother or sport, so I never really knew what most people were talking about anyway.

I went right off celebrity culture at about the same time as I seriously discovered traditional music - Scottish, English and Gaelic. - at age 16. I then had about six or seven years of deliberately not consuming any mainstream "entertainment" or "culture", and so there's a sort of lacuna at that point in my knowledge of who the celebrities were, and the films folk were talking about, etc. After that, I started my 35-year career of working with teenagers, and so I went out of my way to know just enough about what they were watching and listening to, to let them know I could relate to them in that way. And of course bringing up my own kids adumbrated that process. And then since retiring I've gone back to avoiding most things that come on the telly: I'll watch the news once a day, and I usually watch fitba, but that's about it. I loathe and despise reality TV, chat shows and game shows. And I'm happy to say I'm never anywhere near a water cooler: we have nice cold water that comes out of the tap, and there are lovely cool streams running down the bens into the sea.

I like the Keith Lemon character, but then again I like Leigh. The problem is that like many of you, I really have no fucking idea who most of the "celebrities" are out there so a lot of what he does goes by me, but what he does is in a way utterly ridicule celebrity culture from inside it. It's deliberately inane, bawdy, insulting and lowest common denominator, but there is a hidden dagger in all of it. Certainly to me it seems that what he is doing is quite amusing however I think it's meant for a different audience.

The last wildly popular show I watched realtime was "Archie Bunker". I record some shows now, most importantly "Eureka". Carter is Everyman caught up in today's world. Great allegory.
