Said Peter...what you're requesting just isn't my bag
Said Daemon, who's sorry too, but y'see we didn't have no choice
And our hands they are many and we'd be of one voice
We've come all the way from Wigan to get up and state
Our case for survival before it's too late

I've got the pre-game show on in the background, but I'm not really watching it.
these are things we think we know
these are feelings we might even share
these are thoughts we hide from ourselves
these are secrets we cannot lay bare.

MiM is doing the watching, I'm listening: the Swedish-language news that precedes the presidential election evening reports, which will be running from around 7:45 PM to late night on three channels at least. It will be interesting to see how our girls relate to a male president - they have no memory of one during their lifetime...

apophenia wrote:I simply do not understand. I'll be watching a foreign film, and the author of the subtitles will translate something completely arbitrarily, when there's a perfectly good straightforward literal translation for the phrase or word, which they decided against. And it annoys me, and I remain annoyed for a good several minutes afterword before I can get my dander down and refocus my attention on the story and the film. Why do they do that? Where's Ronja? She's the witch of word interpolations. Explain it to me.
Sorry for the delay - I only saw this now. There are several possibilities that I can think of:

1) If the translation is generally OK, the translation team/company may have used a (somewhat) substandard subcontractor or even machine translation for the "raw" translation, and missed one or two things during the editing phase.

2) If the translation is generally shaky, the TV channel or movie company may have cut corners by buying the cheapest or near-cheapest translator and not bothering to check the result to boot.

3) Auto-correct - need I say more? :bored:

4) Any (creative) mixture of the above. :sigh:
