I'm not a fan, but to me they are interesting from a sociological point of view. The killer is often a masked assailant who cuts down the promiscuous and debauched while hunting but failing to kill the virginal main character. This has historical precident with some of the Mummers of Guysers dramas with the Unicorn and certain demons. More recently though they are moralistic date movies for young couples and they deal with penetration angst.

I thought that it turned out Henry Lee Lucas and his partner Otis were more or less mentally enfeebled dupes that the cops used to clear up as many murder and missing person cases as they could?

The genre irritates me. The characters are always doing retarded shit.. like in the original Saw when the girl puts her hand in that razor blade trap thing. Instead of loosening the blades off her wrist with the other hand she sticks it in the other hole. All these movies are filled with WTF moments like that that just annoy me too much.
