3-D cinema coming to an end?
3-D cinema coming to an end?
I already mentioned when I saw Thor: 3-D that that was me done with it. In fact, I was sort of kicking myself after for bothering because I haven't really seen a film where the 3-D was justified.
It seems that cinema goers are also done with it and 3-D is taking a bit of a beating at the box office.
Well there's another 3-D fad soundly crushed.

I can take it or leave it. I grew up before 3D was workable, so I'm quite okay with 2D. I have seen some movies where it was quite well done, however, like "Avatar".
Re: 3-D cinema coming to an end?
Yeah. It was well enough done in Avatar even if the effect wore off pretty quickly.

I liked having the urge to tilt my head and look around a tree or bush. Some old reflexes came back when they were halted at the end with reports of "movement" in the bush ahead.Animavore wrote:Yeah. It was well enough done in Avatar even if the effect wore off pretty quickly.

Re: 3-D cinema coming to an end?
3D will never take off until they can do it without the glasses, and without it being more expensive. The technology for that is still in prototype stages and I imagine it would be very expensive to fit a cinema for it - but then cinema might be on it's way out over the next decade anyway, with it being so much cheaper to get good quality at home.
It'll be interesting to see if any arty-type directors actually make use of 3D at some point - I mean not just for flashy visuals, but so that it really makes a difference to the film.

Avatar and 'Up' were brilliant with it I thought, though that is about it. I saw Alice in Wonderland in 3D and walked out.

I didn't think much of the 3D in "Alice", but I liked the rest of it enough to ignore that part. It was surreal enough to be fun and wasn't a verbatim rehash of the original story.Rum wrote:Avatar and 'Up' were brilliant with it I thought, though that is about it. I find the 3-D works better for animations, of which Avatar is one (let's be honest here). Toy Story 3 worked very well also. I think its when you bring it into the real world it starts to get messy.

"Avatar" was CGI, which counts as animated in my book.Animavore wrote:I find the 3-D works better for animations, of which Avatar is one (let's be honest here). Toy Story 3 worked very well also. I think its when you bring it into the real world it starts to get messy.

It's crap.
Thor was too damned dark to watch 3D properly, a waste of my money; Avatar looked ok in 3D, from time to time only; Clash of the Titans... retro-fitting 3D, guff.
And now I hear The Hobbit is going to be ruined as well. So many action movies are set in the dark, possibly more forgiving with the special effects, by the dark + 3D = blur.

The Hobbit won't be ruined if you watch it in 2-D. Sayin' is all.
And has for that retro-fitted crap... don't go near it. I saw the other Avatar film in retro-fit. It was atrocious.
By the way, the new Harry Potter film is retro-fit. Just a heads up.

Avatar made me seasick. I won't be going to any more 3-d films
Outside the ordered universe is that amorphous blight of nethermost confusion which blasphemes and bubbles at the center of all infinity—the boundless daemon sultan Azathoth, whose name no lips dare speak aloud, and who gnaws hungrily in inconceivable, unlighted chambers beyond time and space amidst the muffled, maddening beating of vile drums and the thin monotonous whine of accursed flutes.

The good news is "Star Wars" is being re-released in 3D.

Won't that mean waiting sodding yonks for the DVD to come out? I can hear the ad's now, "only in 3D"Animavore wrote:The Hobbit won't be ruined if you watch it in 2-D. Sayin' is all.

Re: 3-D cinema coming to an end?
I don't think any film has come out yet that was only in 3-D. Anyway, didn't you watch the clip above? POTC and Kung-Fu Panda 2 both made more sales in 2-D than 3-D. In other words, audiences are turning away from 3-D. Even the shares have dropped in 3-D cinema. The makers of The Hobbit would be shooting themselves in the foot to not have a 2-D version.Ironclad wrote:Won't that mean waiting sodding yonks for the DVD to come out?
