Shameless vs Shameless US

Post by Chinaski » Sat Jun 11, 2011 10:45 am

So after having devoured all 8 seasons of the REAL Shameless, and learning that there's a bit of Frank in all of us (me especially), I am now tentatively having a go at the Showtime produced US version of the show, starring William H. Macy as Frank Gallagher.
The first thing I noticed was how jarring the intro monologue sounds without the mumbling Manc accent. Macy sounds nothing like a proper alkie, he sounds like he'd be floored by a single can of Tennent's Super. Next, the character of Fiona. While the original UK character was attractive, she wasn't stunningly beautiful to the point where she looked fake. She has personality, though, amazing personality, enough to get James McAvoy absolutely hooked. Emmy Rossum, however, who plays Fiona in the US version, is absolutely stunning, and too much so to be a believable character. Third, the character of Steve McBride. While it's unfair to ask anyone to compete with McAvoy, who was brilliant and one of the best characters on the whole fucking show even though he was only there for two seasons, but this guy just looks like a cunt.
I'll update when I've finished the first episode.

I've avoided watching it so far and had completely forgotten about it but I'm running out of programmes to waste my time watching so might give it a go.. :? We've already had a thread on it somewhere, I think it all went a bit Merkin vs UK :hehe:
Men! They're all beasts!
Yeah. But isn't it wonderful?

By the way I haven't nor have any intention of watching the US version. Skins either.

Ahah. Right, well, as I said, the US one doesn't hold a candle to the UK one. Emmy Rossum is boring as hell compared to the original Fiona. In fact, all the characters seem dull as fuck. Threlfall IS Frank Gallagher, Macy can't pull it off. Sheila isn't even a person yet. Karen had me hooked from the moment she came on screen in the original, and here, she's just a big "what?".
Not to mention the entire cinematography and scenery is bigger, brighter, faster and all that- catering to American audiences with no attention span, I guess.

I don't see why they would remake something that is so deeply British. I mean The Office you can get away with because it's a bit more universal and as far as I know the Americans made their version their own rather than a line for line remake.
This works both ways, of course. Imagine a British remake of Trailer Park Boys!

If it turns out that they've made the Maguires some black ghetto crime syndicate I will blow a gasket.
