Horizon BBC2 9.00 tonight 'What is reality'?
Will be watching it. Horizon, for non-Brits is a consistently, for the most part, excellent popular science TV program.

Don't know if anyone saw it,. Although the programme was very worthwhile watching I think the title was a bit misleading. It was really about the latest theoretical limits concerning cosmology, quantum mechanics and related research. Fascinating stuff, if ultimately still mystifying if you don't understand the maths which 99.9% of us don't, sadly.

Good, good ... I have it recorded. I must finish watching a recording of last week's QI XL first though ...Rum wrote:Don't know if anyone saw it,. haven't got time to watch now, can you just explain reality to us in a few words?Rum wrote:Don't know if anyone saw it,. Sure - no Problem. Reality sucks big time. OK?HomerJay wrote:haven't got time to watch now, can you just explain reality to us in a few words?Rum wrote:Don't know if anyone saw it,. That helps us Merkins too. The ones that don't have access to them Britishy channels, anyhow. Must have been a short program.

Not much in there I haven't heard or read before, but it's always nice to here things again when they sound awesome but you don't understand them. Although there was also more detail on the holographic principle than I've read about before.
The thing that's most mind boggling to me is the delayed choice quantum experiment. I don't think they mentioned it in the program, but they definitely mentioned that if, in a double slit experiment, you observe which slit the particle passes through, it stops it acting like a wave and you don't get the interference pattern. But the delayed choice gets really weird. If you decide whether or not to observe the particle after it has passed the slits, that decision seems to effect what the particle did in the past, when it went through one or both. I think I've described that right. If not read this http://news.sciencemag.org/sciencenow/2 ... 16-04.html
[Disclaimer - if this is comes across like I think I know what I'm talking about, I want to make it clear that I don't. I'm just trying to get my thoughts down]

Superb program. I really wish I could get my head around more of this stuff.
How long will it be before quantum computers are commonplace do you think?

The next step is using photons in place of electrons in microprocessor architectures which use fiberoptic channels instead of doped metals controlling the flow of electrons. Those are already in the developmental stage.

But will they be able to run Call Of Duty - World At War on full settings?Anthroban wrote:20 years or more.JacksSmirkingRevenge wrote:Superb program. I really wish I could get my head around more of this stuff.

My dear sir, they'll be able to run the World at War or Peace. That was a joke.
I fully understand that if/when these machines do happen then they will change everything.
