Jim Carrey

Post by charlou » Mon May 10, 2010 1:08 am

Taken from Pappa's Steampunk movies thread and referring to Jim Carrey in the film Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events ...

What, Lemony Snicket, Gawd? Oh, yes, definitely worth a watch. Most definitely. I guess it may depend upon your tolerance for Jim Carrey, though. He seems to be a love-him-or-hate-him kind of actor/comedian. But I thought he was great in this role.
I've watched many of his films and enjoyed them all for various reasons. The first time I saw Jim Carrey was in a film at the local drive-in just before it closed ... Ace Ventura Pet Detective .. and I laughed my arse off - we were stoned and his ott brash silliness took me by surprise. I've watched it since and now find it lame as fuck. :dono: When Nature Calls is better - some elements of grit and sarcasm included there. I like his versatility, his more edgy and dark roles .. Cable Guy .. The Number 23 is intriguing ... Back to his slapstick humour, Fun with Dick and Jane is entertaining  ... Not keen at all on the cheesy and moralistic aspects of some of his movies/roles and his comedy movies often have stupid endings I don't like.

Favourite Jim Carrey movie: The Grinch

Elements of steampunk in that film, too, btw.

What did you think of him as The Riddler?

Batman Forever ... I barely recall the movie, let alone his role in it for some reason. :dono:

Reminder clip looks pretty typical ahehehe ...

Val Kilmer made a kinda 8-) Batman ...

Batman films = pseudo steampunk? :what: I'm looking for it everywhere ...

I didn't even remember he was in that role until someone reminded me. He's like Tim Curry, either very good or very bad. ("Congo" for one of Curry's worst. "Rocky Horror" for one of the best.)

I though Fun With Dick and Jane was great - mainly because I appreciated his role in the subversive plot. Tea Leoni was better though, imo

I though Number 23 and Eternal Sunshine were piles of wank. Limeny Snickets was visually entertaining but he didn't really stand out mjuch for me with that one.

Ho-hum but worth a chuckle here and there for most of his other films. Liar Liar was alright... but I just can't stand most American films which start out funny and fast paced but degenerate into nauseating righteous sappy family values crap, which unfortunately too many Hollywood comedies tend to do these days.

Jim Carey, vaccination crank? Every time you watch one of his films, another 100 children get measles......

Anyone stupid enough to listen to Jim Carrey's advice on vaccinations deserves to get measles.

Has anyone seen The Truman Show? I'm thinking of picking that up. It looks like it might be kinda good.
People think "queue" is just "q" followed by 4 silent letters.

But those letters are not silent.

They're just waiting their turn.

Cool, thanks guys. It's from Peter Weir, I see. Good director.

The Truman Show has one big hole that always annoys me. If they don't want him to leave the island, then why teach him about the rest of the world? Just teach him that the island is the whole world and there is nothing else, giving him no incentive to leave.

I suppose they want it to be real for the viewers though.

How has nobody yet mentioned The Mask?

[Disclaimer - if this is comes across like I think I know what I'm talking about, I want to make it clear that I don't. I'm just trying to get my thoughts down]
