It starred John Hurt and Richard Burton. It should've been brilliant with those two alone, it wasn't. It had all the stuff from the book, even the same lines in many parts, but it was stripped of all its deep psychological and vertiginous paranoia. Even the torture scenes weren't hard-hitting and there was never the sense of sinisterness in O'Brien and Room 101 that accompanied these in the book either.
It was quite dull, actually.
Those scenes creeped me out completely. It's been a while since I've seen it but I thought it was a pretty faithful version. Grim as hell but accurate. Face cage rats give me the heebyjeebies.
I just think it would've been far better if it had've been done by David Lynch or something. Imagine it having the
Eraser treatment... with all those industrial sounds in the back and a use of dark shadows and textures?
That's how I would've preferred it.

It would have been a lot weirder but 1984 is very matter of fact, nothing is surreal it's just nasty. Lynch would have had ....... metaphors and shit.
At least I'm housebroken.

Oh. I was strictly talking stylistically. Surreal would not have suited that film. I just meant the use as in the use of atmosphere. You might notice that
Eraserhead (I meant above) has almost no music, just the sounds of mechanical things chugging and rumbling as well as some drawn out shots of people's faces capturing almost what they're thinking.
Obviously singing and dancing chicken and the like are not for it.

To this day I cannot watch all of Eraserhead. I get to the scene with chickens for din dins and freak out and come back in when it's over. Those fucking chickens man. Nasty.

Having said that I just watched The Expendables. Completely stupid as a movie and as a story but nevertheless it is possibly the most awesome thing I have ever laid eyes on. I felt sympathy for Dolph Lundgren.
This should not be possible in any universe.
It happened.
It's a movie that doesn't pretend to be anything else other than what it is but such self awareness is usually the death of a film. In this case it is what makes it magnificent. It is not grotesque in it's violence, there are times when you cry out for slaughter and it holds off but when the gruesome comes it is wonderful.
It is all I hate about cinema but it is probably my favourite movie of the year so far.
Fuck you Sly.

I liked it. I know it was very pared down, but it captured the general feel of the book quite well.

It was alright I guess. It's just, I had a certain look, feel and image in my head and... it did even come close... :sighsm:

Well, yeah. There was a true grottiness about the book, and a horror in 101 and other stuff that isn't conveyed. But, I expect adaptations to never do a book justice because they can't really.
One film that did impress me about the way it really conveyed the feel of the book was Catch-22. Obviously, they had to miss loads out (most of the story really), but it does capture something of the book really well.

I love that book. I've read it 20 or 30 times I think.
