I'm watching a trippy movie right now called "It Runs in the Family" 2003 with the entire Douglas family - Kirk, Michael and Cameron. Cameron gets busted for drugs and arrested in the movie. It's strange to watch, considering that's what ended up happening in their real lives. And, I honestly believe Michael Douglas's reaction to his son's problem, as acted in the movie is probably what happened in real life. It's worth watching.

^^^ This. I thought it was out-and-out rubbishy crap. A disgrace to Burton and an insult to the audience.Normal wrote:I watched this film yesterday. Worst Burton movie I have seen. The charachters were 2D and dead, the plot never got anywhere and the FX were basically the whole movie.Pappa wrote:I watched Alice in Wonderland recently.... and I wasn't sure what to make of it. I think I would have preferred to have seen it in 2D, as I think the 3D experience didn't add anything to the film and actually distracted me from the dialogue (which was mostly very good, particularly Helena Bonham Carter's stuff). I was really impressed with the CGI, possibly the best I've ever seen, but it felt as if several scenes were put in simply to show off the 3D effects, which is a really bad idea. I was disappointed that Tim Burton would stoop so low as to put in such visual fluff.

The only redeeming feature was Johnny Depp.

Even then I couldn't watch the entire thing all the way through. I too was really disappointed in it.Deersbee wrote:The only redeeming feature was Johnny Depp.

I quite liked it.
I thought it was harmless, light entertainment.
I thought there was a lot of trash, but by comparison to the past few years it was one of the better films released.

Total agreement. The 3d was an add-on and not part of the whole.maiforpeace wrote:Even then I couldn't watch the entire thing all the way through. I too was really disappointed in it.Deersbee wrote:The only redeeming feature was Johnny Depp.
Toy Story 3D - now that was something else. A truly wonderful film..and given its themes, not truly a kids film either.
Re: So.... Seen Any Good Movies Lately?
You're going to hate me for this.

I was really impressed by the level of detail in this film. Obviously computers are a lot more powerful now so they were really able to vamp up the textures and items on screen at once. The 3-D is probably the best I've seen, I think, judging by the Legend of the Guardians trailer that preceded the film, animation fares better on this format. The visuals gave me something to look at during occasional periods of boredom.
The film is a simple rehash of the first two. It follows the exact same formula. I didn't see the need to watch the same film for a third time. I was never the biggest Toy Story fan. I never thought it compared to Finding Nemo, Ratatouille. The Incredibles or even A Bug's Life. I always placed it somewhere between Monster's Inc. and Wall-E. I thought, by the hype, this film was going to be different, darker, with more adult themes. It's not. Even the protagonist was not up to much. What happened to the old days of truly despicable baddies like Scar from The Lion King, Cruella DeVille or even Hopper from A Bugs Life? People you could really wish to come to a sticky end.
It had some nice touches though, and I raised a smile once or twice. There were no actual laughs in this one. Overall, disappointed.
I'm sure the kids'll love it.

Ani, I loved Toy Story 3. But that's probably because my expectations were very very low going into it. I loved the first one to pieces, and quite liked the second one. But I REALLY didn't see a need for a third, and would much rather have seen something brand new, and not a rehash of a rehash. I suppose that's why I was pleasantly surprised.
People think "queue" is just "q" followed by 4 silent letters.
But those letters are not silent.
They're just waiting their turn.

And the mushroom topping!

I've got to watch it again soon!

Re: So.... Seen Any Good Movies Lately?
Just been to see Mother, a film by Korean director Joon-ho Bong. Quite a strange film that I liked a lot but I am not sure is quite up to the hype surrounding it. It's the story of an elderly mother that investigates the murder for which her mentally handicapped son has been summarily convicted by incompetent police. The thing that struck me most about it was its sense of 'foreignness' - the glimpses into the way that things are done in a rural, Korean town were very interesting.
