Oh, you know what movie really sucks, but I didn't realize it when I was little? Labyrinth. Uh... Hm. Yeah. Just bad.
I loved Dark Crystal, so was excited to see another Jim Henson production in Labyrinth, especially since I love Bowie. But I thought Bowie looked utterly ridiculous, and thought the movie as a whole was god-awful. I wondered if I should give it another chance with fresh eyes and a different (adult) perspective. I guess I won't bother.
I wish I'd just kept the pleasant memories. When I was little, that image of Jennifer Connelly in a ball gown, floating inside a bubble, was important to me.

It's easy to hate Gwyneth Paltrow, but I love that movie. Geoffrey Rush makes up for a lot, acting-wise. Tom Stoppard's a smart writer, too. And Sandy Powell did the costumes, which are brilliant.

J agrees with you, though. I re-watch that one alone.

I have to admit, I'd love to get some of those red-and-white-striped PJs for the Sprog.

Congratulations, you just beat up a children's book. :sulk:
If it's a children's book, why are so many adults obsessed with it? And if it's appropriate fare for grown-ups, then it should be able to take a beating.

I just read The Golden Compass, and, well, any Harry Potter I've read just pales in comparison. I think HP is great if you're eight. And if that hurts JK Rowling's feelings, I'm sure they'll have some kleenex for her at the bank.

It's a good read even for a grown-up if you keep in mind it's aimed at children. As for why adults are "obsessed" with it, I'm rather pleased that some parents are taking the time to read what their kids are reading. They can discuss the events in the books intelligently, and the possibility of communication is opened wider.

JK doesn't worry what you think, so :relax:

I guess I'm going to have to read The Golden Compass.

Have you read that series about the dragons, Eragon? Written by a teenage boy when he started the series.

Rowling wipes her nose with the Amur Leopard hair weave tissues inlaid with 100 thousand dollar bills and innumerable fanatic fan letters hand woven together Oscar de la Renta. 5000 top scientologists and Tom Cruise then spend years studying the pattern of effluence left upon the holy tissue, discerning plot, characters, and narrative and present their result to the great Rowling in a great ceremonious occasion involving sword swallowers, kitten jugglers, and skinned flutists. She then sends it off to her publisher, sells the film rights and her coffers increase by another several billion dollars.

Or so the legends go..

'The Tourist' was a 'premier' on Sky tonight. Johny Depp, Angela Jolie? You would think they could do something with a a plot that was at lest slightly fun...but no.

I turned it off after wasting 45 minutes of my life I won't get back! :nono:

I kept watching it and checking my watch to see how much longer it had. Then I realized I was at home (bless you, Vocidin) and turned to a different channel.

I'm assuming Depp was the person of interest there?

Bullshit. Adults are reading it for themselves. I know many fans who aren't parents and never plan to become parents.

I know JK doesn't care what I think. that was the point of that comment. But yes, you really should read The Golden Compass. I need book 2! :ab:

I read them because Brenda wanted me to do so. She was going to be a children's librarian and wanted somebody she could argue with about the books. And I didn't mind at all, it was a completely new genre for me, I didn't read childrens books when I was a child, I read William Shirer.

Eragon was pretty gritty, not a fluffy world at all. I don't know if the series lived up to its promise, but it's several books along now. Rachel Weisz voiced the dragon in the movie version.

My mom was a children's librarian. We read all sorts of stuff growing up. And some books really do age well. Even though she's pretty... Christian-ish, I guess, I still enjoy Madeleine L'Engle's books. And Frances Hodgeson Burnett.

I'll check out Eragon if I get a chance.
