My problem was that it was a rather trite approach to the whole thing. The term is real, but the point is that they were referring to something which did exist all over the planet and they chose to nuke a tree to get it. It's not 'unobtanium', it's 'cannotbefuckedthinkingofarealreasontanium'.
The amount of money wasted on all those troops and missiles and the project of the Avatars itself, how this 'unobtanium' justified it was never explained. Not even the bad guy "It'll make more money than we've spent" speech.

But I was able to justify the name in my head by assuming somebody like an internet entrepreneur had discovered the element. I'm not outraged at avatar because it was a pretty average movie.
I do get outraged at Battlefield Earth because it's an hour long Scientology recruitment video.
