The amount of money wasted on all those troops and missiles and the project of the Avatars itself, how this 'unobtanium' justified it was never explained. Not even the bad guy "It'll make more money than we've spent" speech.

I take it Inter-stellar travel becomes relatively cheap in the future then?

I winced when I first hear "Unobtainium" and then looked at my wife who "winced" too, then we laughed and said "Oh God". But I was able to justify the name in my head by assuming somebody like an internet entrepreneur had discovered the element. Shit, when you think about names like Google, Yahoo, and check these out I found on the internet:
"These are not made up. Check them out...
1. Who Represents is where you can find the name of the agent that represents any celebrity. Their Web site is: www.whorepresents.com
2 . Experts Exchange is a knowledge base where programmers can exchange advice and views at: www.expertsexchange.com
3. Looking for a pen? Look no further than Pen Island at: www.penisland.net
4. Need a therapist? Try Therapist Finder at: www.therapistfinder.com
5. There's the Italian Power Generator company: www.powergenitalia.com
6. And don't forget the Mole Station Native Nursery in New South Wales: www.molestationnursery.com .
7. If you're looking for IP computer software, there's always: www.ipanywhere.com .
8. The First Cumming Methodist Church Web site is: www.cummingfirst.com .
9. And the designers at Speed of Art await you at their wacky Web site: www.speedofart.com . "

Apparently the mineral unobtainium was used in The Core too and nobody noticed (or even watched all of it I'm sure).
Libertarianism: The belief that out of all the terrible things governments can do, helping people is the absolute worst.

I watched the core and I don't remember jack shit.
They also used 'cold fusion' in that movie I believe.

Relatively if they can move a digger like the one in the first Pandora shots across space. And fast too, "5 years, 9 months, mumble days".born-again-atheist wrote:I take it Inter-stellar travel becomes relatively cheap in the future then?

And the cost of the avatar project itself, and the cost of housing and supplies and... well, you get the idea.
If a film is going to be pegged as 'epic' then logistics actually matter, for once.

Yeah, like the logistics for the Death Star. Death Star Jr. was even better, they didn't have to finish it before using it.born-again-atheist wrote:Plus all the big fuck off robots, and the big fuck off missiles and the tiny fuck off bullets.Gawdzilla wrote:Relatively if they can move a digger like the one in the first Pandora shots across space. Well, Star Wars sort of gave itself a 'get out of jail free card' by being in another galaxy filled with magic.Gawdzilla wrote:Yeah, like the logistics for the Death Star. The moment you invoke magic everything goes out the window.
Avatar ignored magic and tried to use science. It failed like the new Star Wars and their... mido whatever the fuck it is.

Yes, it is still just a movie.
But this happens to be a thread about a movie on which I have an opinion. I'm not inclined to discuss the movie at every opportunity, only when it's introduced.

No problem with your input, just suggesting outrage is not an emotion I can work up over a movie other than Triumph des Willensborn-again-atheist wrote:Yes, it is still just a movie.

I'm not outraged at avatar because it was a pretty average movie.Gawdzilla wrote:No problem with your input, just suggesting outrage is not an emotion I can work up over a movie other than Triumph des Willensborn-again-atheist wrote:Yes, it is still just a movie.

I do get outraged at Battlefield Earth because it's an hour long Scientology recruitment video.
