You know that he is planning to adapt The Hobbit as well, with as much of the same cast as he can manage? And it's going to be in two parts, which is odd because it's obviously a single-movie book. :dono:

Guillermo del toro is directing - the first film will be The Hobbit, the second will be a bridging film and original story set between the Hobbit & LOTR

The main come back to this is that there is too much source material to fit into the movie BUT Peter Jackson adds in so much unnecessary shit with Arwen (Liv Tylor) and Elrond (Hugo Weaving) that turns the film into a soppy love story instead of the adventure/journey that it's supposed to be.
You can't have a romance betwween a main character and a character that is hardly seen. All Jacko did was pull the story from the appendixes. Elrond is barely in films 2 and 3, and Arwen is in them very little. however i see now problem with it.. the love story was there in the book.. why shouldn't it be in the film?

The other thing that really pisses me off is the way Jackson intentionally leaves out action scenes (like the scene with the wolves outside Moria or the Nazgul above the Anduin), The only reason I can think of for him doing this is so that the first movie is a lot less 'magical' that the others making them seem more grand and epic by comparison.
Because you cannot include everything! And a film has to be more than just set piece, cut, set piece. He took time o gently introduce the characters and the action and build the story from its humble hobbiton beginning to the war epic we see in TTT and ROTK
The other thing he does is over simplify characters, He makes Merry and Pippin in to the fucking Chuckle Brothers when they're both quite intelligent in the book and goes to great lengths to make Gimli annoying so that people can get enjoyment from watching bad things happen to him in the later two movies.
Again film is different from literature.. characters have to be exagerated becaue you can't have 4 pages describing the subtleties of their mannerism and thought processes.. and you have to try to make each character stand out as different
Add to that the fact that he makes every battle unwinable then magics a resolve out his ass from nowhere each time (like the Elves in Helms Deep or the ground cracking open to swallow the Orcs at the Morranan) when the pitted odds they had in the book were bad enough.
Same thing again.. bringing the elves into Helm's deep was a way of showing that they were involved.. and made them seem a lot less selfish than they are in the book. As for the scene at Morranan.. well what did you expect? to see orcs running off, ending their ways, setting up homes with a few dwarf and elf women? you have to show that the success in the mission as complete.. especially after 9+ hours.. w have to get our pay-off... a few pesky orcs hanging around would complicate matters and make it feel incomplete!

just be grateful they didn't bring Kate Winslet out as the physical manifestation of Sauron - as was discussed..

El, would you agree or disagree that Peter Jackson "did a movie about the world that Tolkein created"?

Absolutely.. and the amount of work that went into those movies is testament to that.. from the fact they had a forge, to the detail that went into the costum, to using the two primary Tolkien artists to design the films, to Viggo running round in his outfit to make it look worn, to the amount of training the horses had, to the fact they scouted NZ finding places to use to film, to howard Shore's score which i think could not be bettered by anyone on earth ( and he said himself he wanted it to seem like it was odl and had been "found").. the depth in the filmmaking process is a reflection of the depth in the history and mythology JRR created.

I would kiss PJ's hairy buttocks with relish

Incidentally, i went to the premiere of The Two Towers in Leicester Square and met Andy Sirkis ans well as seeing all the cast and crew andI have met Howard Shore twice and have all three soundtrack CDs signed by him :)

I would need relish, ketchup, and horseradish.

The buzz is that Andy will recreate Gollum for Del Toro.

I hope they've refined the process to the point where he won't have to do every scene three times.

Camera angles!
"The fact is that far more crime and child abuse has been committed by zealots in the name of God, Jesus and Mohammed than has ever been committed in the name of Satan. Many people don't like that statement but few can argue with it."

He did one as Andy, one in a blue suit, and one with just his voice. It was complicated Weta stuff and I only half-paid attention to it.
