Hourly "News Headlines" on so called free-to-air TV channels. Basically, what it said on the tin: A 15 second recitation of a few headlines, usually followed by the phrase "More news at x o'clock". The news programs were of course tabloid style and both contributed to the reduction of the targeted audience's attention span. They were simultaneously opinion forming.

Advertising. I haven't owned a TV or had regular access to one for 15 years or more, and therefore I've found I no longer understand the language of TV advertising.

it's nearly 25 years that I got rid of the idiot box, the only reason I might regret the move is when people I'm with talk about stuff I have virtually no knowledge of.

It's simple. Actors (or an amusing animal) do a number of stunts on screen and amuse you. You try to guess what the product is.
Or, in US: A drug for some awful disease, like Crohn's, and the people go about looking normal. End note: possible side effect of death.
Or, a family interacting with something. You try to guess if it is a consumer product or an internet provided service.

Dites moi où dans quel pays
Est Flora, la belle Romaine
Archipiade ne Thaïs,
Qui fut sa cousine germaine
Semblablement où est la belle,
Qui ordonna, que Buridan
Fût jeté en un sac en Seine?
Mais où sont, les neiges d'antant...

I must have modernized the spelling, and maybe Brassens did the same for some words and grammar, but that's by François Villon, and that guy, you respect him or you end up with a dagger in the liver...
