Wrong in which direction? (having not personally seen the film nor read the reviews)
It was almost universally lauded by critics.

It sucked.
I wondered if I had seen the same movie as the critics, because that piece of shit movie was a piece of shit. I found all its positive reviews inexplicable.

I'm looking forward to John Carter because it looks cool from the trailer, and also I have an affection for the source material. I'm not expecting to be blown away, though. Or even just plain blown. I'm just hoping it's a bit of harmless fun and that it isn't too terribly awful.

Do that.

One creepy note. The Satan figure in "Ghostrider: Spirit of Vengeance" was played by the same guy who did Deja Thoris's father (Tardos Mors) in this movie.

Mini Biography

Ciaran Hinds was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland on February 9, 1953. He was one of five children and the only son. His father was a doctor who hoped to have Ciaran follow in his footsteps, but that was not to be. It was his mother Moya, an amateur actress, who was the real influence behind his decision to become an actor. Though he did enroll in Law at Queens' University of Belfast, he left that in order to train in acting at RADA. He began his stage career at the Glasgow Citizens' Theatre as a pantomime horse in the production of "Cinderella". Staying with the company for several years, he starred in a number of productions, including playing the lead roles in "Arsenic and Old Lace" and "Faust". His stage career has included working with The Field Day Company and a number of world tours. He has starred in a number of productions with the Royal Shakespeare Company, including a world tour in the title role of "Richard III". Hinds' film career began in 1981 in the movie Excalibur (1981), which boasted a cast rich in talented actors including Liam Neeson, Gabriel Byrne and Patrick Stewart. In-between his movie work, he's amassed a large number of television credits. Playing such classic characters as "Mr. Rochester" in Jane Eyre (1997) (TV), and "Captain Wentworth" in Persuasion (1995) has increased his popularity and most definitely given him much increased recognition. As for his personal life, you won't be likely to see his name in the weekly tabloids. He likes to keep his private life private. It is known that he is in a long-term, committed relationship with a French-Vietnamese actress named Hélène Patarot and they have a daughter together and live in Paris. He is in very high demand and his reputation as a quality, professional actor is sure to keep him busy for as long as he chooses.

It's nowhere near awful. We both had a good time and a few laughs. It's from a book that is nearly 100 years old, and not all that complex to begin with. This is not "Waiting for Godot", it's a popcorn movie.

:this: Not every movie has to be some epic 'instant classic' that will be discussed in your grandchildren's film class. Usually it is enough that it brings you a few laughs (or shivers, depending on the genre), and maybe a few 'ooooh' or 'hmmmm' moments. They are the modern equivalents of stories told 'round the fire after a day of hunting and gathering - some are good, some are meh, and a few are epic. However, if you only wait for the epic ones, you will miss out on some pretty good ones along the way - and besides, you might be surprised at what entertains you.

Yeah, a movie like this, I wouldn't expect it to be some sort of monumental cinematic achievement like Citizen Kane or Bad News Bears (the original). All I would expect is some light entertainment, and would hope the acting and script were at least reasonably well done.

Mark Kermode wasn't impressed. Apparently they dropped "of Mars" from the title so that it didn't sound too "science fictiony" and scare off any of their potential audience! :nono:

I read an article a little while ago about a critic who was giving up film criticism because he felt that there is no way you can compare hollywood blockbusters to independent dramas and that having had to sit through both day in and out had come to the conclusion that while he understood why "art house" movies often had the critics raving and blockbusters having them ranting it was, often, just snobbery. He came to this conclusion after sitting with his children and watching some children's cartoon which had more cultural references, clever writing and heart than either and realised that the medium itself is too bloated and expensive to make anything really daring, whereas a cheap kids cartoon can be low brow and yet more culturally valuable and significant.

I concur with that. Movies are an increasingly stagnant art form.

Only Gawdzilla is seeing it so far.
I might go out of curiosity, if I don't have to pay for it.
but of course, all my Barsoom lore is second hand (largely through Heinlein, maybe some through Philip J Farmer), so I'm not the best critic on my favorite side of the matter.

I suspect that blockbusters organize critic viewings where the critics are plied with LSD or X laced cocktails, so they'll be so high they'd like ' The Paint is Drying' and rave about the third degree imagery and the innovative camera work.

Movie ticket = $4.00
Buttered popcorn, drink, licorice = ~$3.50

Even if a movie sucks, it is worth going and getting out for the chance at some cheap entertainment.

The critics lauded Shakespeare in Love--it bored the piss out of me.
Movie critics are too self important that I would consult their opinions about a movie.

That would just be sufficient for the trailer. Lots of braid tuggings and birchings, and interminable whinging about the foul taste of saidin's raging, chaotic torrents of diseased power.
Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.

Did we just go in a time machine to 20 years ago or is it that different between California and there?

Movie ticket = $11 (or $14 if you opt for one of the better theaters)
Buttered popcorn, drink, licorice = ~$12-14 (assuming smallest sizes for everything)

:hehe: We have a "Frequent Moviegoer" card, we get points for each purchase. On the way to the theater today I said, "Today we get a free large combo." When we bought our tickets we got a voucher for a free movie. And a voucher for a free large combo. :tut:
