The English: Nothing but a shower of bastards

Isn't amazing how much you change over the course of your life? When I was younger this film was so black and white to me. Now that I'm older and looking at it now I realise they used the English as a convenient enemy which no one was going to question. I can't actually believe how corny this film is looking at it now. It basically stirs up primitive sectarian drives. It's basically a film I once took seriously is now a cartoon.

English = Scum.

Irishy/Scotishy types = Alright.

Why did you take it seriously? It was an action flick which used some truths, highly-elaborated other truths... and added an awful lot of fiction. That aside, the English at the time (or, at least, the ones who made political decisions) really were scum. As for the individuals, it wasn't how you portrayed it. There were shitty Scots and (at least) one shitty Irishman. No non-shitty English people spring to mind (been a long time since I watched it) so it perhaps failed there... although it only showed the English folk in occupation/war. It would have been difficult to fit a cosey Devonshire farm into the film, with its rosey-cheeked occupants who wouldn't harm a fly.

But... meh. It is (and always was) a work of fiction. Enjoyable, but never to be treated as if it was history.

Some years back, I was invited into a mailing list after I made a comment about Westminster's failure wrt Scotland. Mostly, it was populated by ex-pats, or people whose grandmother's next door neighbour came from Scotland... which somehow gave them a worthwhile opinion on the future of Scotland. One such woman had never heard of William Wallace prior to watching Braveheart. In her pro-independence ranting, you could almost see the word "Freeeeedoooom!" rattling around inside her head. I pointed out that Scotland's future should be decided based on the merits of the pros and cons of independence... not a Mel Gibson film.

Regardless of its merits as historical fiction, Braveheart is a gorgeous film, and one I wouldn't mind adding to my Blu-ray collection.

Currently watching, "Blu Ocean." It's a Blu-ray disc of scenes related to the oceans, a part of the "HD Moods" series, that I typically pick up at the used book store for $3-5 each.

I have the one currently playing, an aquarium one (not so good - no sense of depth), a fireplace one, and one of various nature scenes that I've yet to watch. (Apparently, the last is narrated; I just want the background images.)

This week during Black Friday, I picked up the following on Blu-ray:

Pulp Fiction
Kill Bill, Vol. 1
Kingdom Of Heaven
Iron Man 1 & 2
The Mummy Returns
The Mummy: Tombs of the Dragon Emperor
Batman Begins
Poseidon Adventure
300

and a triple disc featuring:
"Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid,"
"The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly," and,
"The Magnificent Seven."

However, I've got an 800 page book to read, so those are for another day.

I also picked up Seasons 1 & 3 of Fringe, as well as seasons 1 & 4 of Bones.

I'm not sure I'll keep all the new discs [especially Bones & The Mummy 2], but that's where I sit today.
