That's on my list... I know it's animation, but is it firmly a grown-up film? :ask: I mean, would a kid be bored by it?

I don't think a kid would be bored by it. Although some of it may go over their heads. Although it seems to go over quite a few adult's heads with some of them saying things like it's 'bleak' or 'depressing'!
Iz not. Iz hilarious :lay:

I wish I had a huge flat screen to watch it on, all I have is my monitor.
A huge TV would make his work closer to the majesty in which he painted it and intended it to be seen. Rothko painted experiences rather than pictures.
When Pappa came to LA in October, I got to take him to MOCA, which had a huge Rothko exhibit. He is one of my favorites

Oh you bitch, I hate you.

Not really. I am jealous though.
To see Rothko in person.......... :swoon:

I love his answer to "Der, how long did it take 'ya to paint that?" "All my life".

I did get to see a huge Fauve exhibit at the LA County Museum of Art.

It needn't be one or the other :dunno:

People think "queue" is just "q" followed by 4 silent letters.

But those letters are not silent.

They're just waiting their turn.

Oh, it's definitely worth getting, Bella, for both you and your son. You'll definitely enjoy it, both of you. Perhaps for different reasons, but still. I wouldn't say it's either a kid's film or an adult's film. It's just a good film. The fact that it's animated is incidental (although if you like claymation animation, it'll certainly add to the charm).

And for the price:

...you can't go wrong

Trust me

Either there is a serious Rothko-wannabe in Finland or my mom really has a Rothko. She has been buying art, little at a time, for several decades now, and AFAIK she has not put anything specific about the paintings, glass or sculptures into her will. I really hope that the two Miros prove to be just good forgeries, 'cause I would so like to have them, but I would not dare to keep originals. I could not sleep at nights for fear of burglary...

Most likely my middle sister will get all the art, though - she's going to give us the hardest of times after mom's demise for anything worth €€€ :(

Nah. I'm sorry. I totally didn't buy the premise of this film.
A drop of sun falls to earth and from it grows a magical golden flower with healing powers. Some old woman, Gothel, finds it and uses it to make herself young by singing to it. She keeps the flower secret for hundreds of years while she remains young.
Now the film makes her out to be selfish because she keeps the flower all to herself. Note this; but first of all, and I hate to sound like a libertarian, she found the flower, it was her right to keep it.
Now a kingdom grows up nearby the mountains this flower is growing. One day the queen is about to give birth but she falls terribly ill. When she gets really bad the town go out to look for the magical flower...
Wait! Wait! Wait! Hold up! The magical flower the old woman found, on her own, in the mountains and kept hidden for hundreds of years since before the time the kingdom even existed! How did they even know about it?!
Anyway the old woman is singing to it when she hears the king's soldiers approaching. She covers the flower but as she scarpers she knocks the covering off. The soldiers find the flower, dig it up, and make it into soup to give to the queen?!
Remember I told you to note the bit where the narrator says the old woman was selfish to keep its healing powers to herself? They just dug it up and destroyed it. The woman didn't even run up and say, "Hold up! No need to destroy it. Just place your hands on it while I sing to it"! WTF?!
So the queen gives birth to Rapunzel who now has magical, healing hair. Gothel steals in at night and cuts a lock of the hair but as she cuts it it turns brown as too does the part it was separated from and loses its power. The woman then takes the child and locks her in a tower.

Now, ok. Kidnapping a child is a pretty shitty thing to do but they destroyed the plant, which presumably could be the cure for cancer, just to save one person. And Gothel is made out to be the bad guy? And why didn't Gothel just uproot the plant and bring it back to her gaff and pot it in the first place anyway?!

Anyway, that aside. It's standard Disney fare.
Wicked old woman, who may or may not deliberately look like Cher in this case. Check.
Young Princess just turned eighteen, conveniently and appropriately for American audiences, wants to go out and explore the world and presumably her sexuality (?). Check.
Dashing hero who appears to look like Aidan Broody (is this what chicks dig now?). Check.
Cute and/or comical animal sidekicks. Check.
Top animation standards (although I'm not entirely happy with Disney ditching traditional animation, I mean, isn't that what they have Pixar for?). Check.
Seven out of ten. I enjoyed it.
