I heard Derek and Clive at a early age. It wasn't the overt swearing that cracked me up though, but the utter absurd bullshit that went with it and the attempts to keep those conversations sounding like normal everyday chatting when it was obvious they were dying to laugh. Stuff like the bit where Pete says "So this guy comes up to me and says "ello"! " and Dud goes "provocative fucker." And Pete agrees "fucking provocative." still sends me into laughter about 30 years since I first heard them.

Peter Cook was, in my 'umble onion, the most complete, comedy genius that this world has so far known.

His ability to layer hyperbole on exaggeration and then twist the comic knife to a level beyond either was unsurpassed.

Dud was an average funny guy whose greatest gift was that, despite his innate niceness, he loved, and instantly clicked onto, Cook's flights of fancy and, spurred on by it, tried desperately to keep up with the obscenity and insanity - when unable to keep up, he simply gave in to completely genuine fits of hysterics. Without Cook, he would have been a footnote in th British comedy scene - with him, he went on to become a worldwide star (something that pissed Pete off immensely and led to the two falling out for many years.) Pete never figured out how "nice" could trump "clever" and found the fact of it despicable!

Derek and Clive was a phenomenon that was both wildly ahead of and also, perversely, inextricably tied to its time! I can still quote almost every line of "Ad Nauseum". If you want to corpse me, just say, in a Pete Cook voice, "That would be a species called the Web-footed Barking Bollock" or "Dolly, get a Polaroid of that!" :hilarious:
