The only reason I brought it up is that as someone born in 1981, the original series always seemed like something from ancient history (like things from before one's own birth always do), so it's weird to think that TNG is now itself ancient to a still younger generation.

Yup, that's a loong time. I remember watching some re-runs of the original series back in the mid-1970's.
Anyway, TNG is currently being re-shown 2 espisodes x weekday.
