Well, there's a lot of the Hobbit still untold after the first one.

I do hope they are going to get more background material into the two sequels, because if there is one ting I found lacking in this first part it was story. Otherwise I loved the movie for giving lots of time to slow scenes that built up ambience, the action scenes where quite over the top, as was expected.

About the HFR I can only say WOW and WOW again. I was sold almost from the entry texts. The picture was absolutely stunning, and I have little understanding for those who complain about how "non movie like this is", well so was synchronized sound and colour, get over it, this is just so much better. That said, naturally there were scenes where camera work, sets, masking or cgi didn't provide what the new format could deliver. But that is not a problem of the format. I foresee absolutely stunning movies, once the the casts have had some time to get used to this format. The 3D was also great, giving space and depth, without jumping on your nose. Except for the glasses, I would say that with this there is little question about weather 3D wins 2D or not.

Jackson pulled a lot of material from the appendices to bridge the gap between The Hobbit and LOTR. For me, this will be new material.

That was really funny

I thought the LOTR films were visually stunning, but boring and rather silly. Also, and most importantly, I felt no emotional investment in them. I didn't care about the characters.* Still, that having been said, I do want to see the Hobbit. There will be visual spectacle if nothing else. So why not.

*For instance, the "You shall not pass!" scene left me cold. It should have been a very powerful scene, sending shivers up my spine. And yet I felt absolutely nothing. And I was really annoyed with Gandalf throughout the entire series of films in that, for a fucking wizard, he never seemed to do anything particularly, you know, wizardy.
Compare to the scene in which Dobby the house elf protects Harry against Lucius Malfoy, his former master. "You shall not harm Harry Potter!" I cried watching this scene. I really cried. And, god help me, I'm tearing up right now just thinking about it. And I'm not even kidding. "Harry Potter has given Dobby...a sock." Jesus Christ I need to get a Kleenex because I'm blubbering now...

even I didn't study them too deeply, beside the languages one that tickled my own interests... and that very late compared to my study of Tolkien, as I had to wait till I bought it in English, my French edition simply didn't include them.
(I had to reconstitute the text of Balin's tombstone from knowing what words would be there and using 'Balin' as a key, because I didn't have the damn Certar table )

Not in LotR... there, the appendices ARE the scholarly book, the stuff JRRT wanted to include but that didn't fit in an epic narrative, or that were useful to understand the background and characters and cultures.
